Profiling/calibration/Epson 7600-MAC
« on: May 11, 2006, 03:20:24 pm »

Greetings,

I am Mac user with a brand new Epson 7600. I am looking for recommendations for getting consistant results from my printer. I use mostly Epson Velvet, Watercolor, fine art, and Matte paper. BTW, I use a G5 2.5 with an Apple 23" ALuminum LCD.

Thanks,
Josef

Josef,
You may find some information on the DOP website. Alain Briot wrote a long article on the 9600 ([a href=\"http://www.outbackphoto.com/printinginsights/pi013/Epson9600.html]here[/url]).

Josef,

Congratulations - the 7600 is an excellent printer.  For matte black printing, I am hard pressed to see much difference between the 7600 and the newer 7800.  Photo black is another story.  The article recommended will be very helpful, but remember, you will need good profiles for your printer.  Bill Atkinson prepared some top notch profiles for the 7600 - 9600 a few years ago that are truly superb, given the relative consitency between 7600's - 9600's, and in the spirit of sharing between artists, he made them available to others.  You can go to his website here http://homepage.mac.com/billatkinson/FileSharing2.htmlhttp://homepage.mac.com/billatkinson/FileSharing2.html and download his matte black profiles.  He includes instructions for their use and I think you will be greatly pleased.  If not, you should invest in some top quality custom profiles.

Good Luck,

Sorry but I meant the Epson 7800, not 7600. I checked out the Atkinson profiles but non match the papers I use.

Thanks for all your help!

Josef,

Half the skill of Bill's profiles is in creating the charts which generate the profiles. As Bill also publishes the charts these can be used to create your own profiles or used by a local custom printer profiler.

I also suggest you have a look at www.computer-darkroom.com for tutorials on print workflow.

Actually there's a lot more to Bill's profiles than targets. He's using two off the shelf profile creation packages plus writing his own to build these profiles. The number of patches is astronomical, at least wit the first series he did. I doubt he'll ever do that again.

Least we forget, this is the guy who wrote MacPaint, Hypercard and much of the Mac OS years ago. Building proprietary software for ICC profile creation isn't too tough for Bill.

Josef,
For sure, he has not posted any for the 7800 combination of matte inks and papers you mentioned.  Do yourself a favor and have a couple or more top quality profiles made by someone who has a high quality spectro, top of the line software, and lots of experience so that you can obtain all that the 7800 has to offer.  Andrew Rodney, for one, meets the above qualifications.  And for quality sake, don't shop for profiles on price alone.  If you want the best that you can achieve with the Epson driver and that printer you need top quality profiles that will maximize the gamut, provide neutrality and subtle gradations, and smooth tonality.  You can "roll your own" if you are so inclined and have the time to learn and gain experience, and lots of money for a professional spectrophotometer and software.

Good Luck,
Ed

So, are you printing with a 7600 or a 7800? If indeed you are using a 7800, be sure you've installed the additional profiles that start with SP. These profiles were made by EPson America and are so good that many people who use the 78/9800 printers have not found a need for "custom profiles". Note, the papers profiled are only Epson papers so if you use other papers you'll need to go the custom profile route.
