Canon 5D2: Picture style question
« on: February 24, 2016, 02:49:24 pm »

Just to confirm: If I change from faithful to monochrome, that does not change the actual file to BW correct? The files are still all in color.

I just tried monochrome, and was surprised when the CR2S came up in color on my computer.

Correct: The raw file (CR2) is not affected by the "Picture Style" settings (including monochrome). These settings are applied to the jpeg file embedded in the raw file (used for the in-camera preview and live view) and any separate jpeg file produced by the camera if that option is selected in the "Quality" settings.

At least for the Capture One and DxO Optics and presumably CS applications the in-camera preview is ignored and a colour view is generated. Canon's Digital Photo Professional (DPP) application uses the camera's setting for its preview so to revert to the raw colour view the Picture Style setting in DPP needs to be changed to "Neutral".

Thanks One, good, I was surprised when the files came up color, but glad, as now I know I can use that just to see BW while shooting, knowing I'm retaining color.

Yes, BUT, and a massive but, if you shoot a video in monochrome then it is monochrome permanently.

Ah... new question: If you shoot Jpeg, not Raw, is the image permanently BW?

Good point except if you use Magic Lanterns add-on firmware movies can be shot in raw in which case (although I'm not certain) the picture style is ignored.
