CO9 won't import Affinity Photo PSD or TIFF?
« on: December 23, 2015, 02:08:11 pm »

Is anyone else having trouble getting CO9 to import PSD or TIFF files exported from Affinity Photo? Those files don't even show up as thumbnails in the import dialog, for me.

That's probably because of the alpha channel Affinity adds to TIFF files.

Is there a way to make it stop so that I can work between CO and Affinity? If I'm going to be saddled with Photoshop anyway, I may just as well be using Lightroom. :(

- CO9 has no problem reading Affinity jpeg's nor 16-bit multi-layer tiff's ( that's in a sessions folder, not catalog) but imports both as a single layer - irrespective whether or not the tiff is multi-layered.
- CO9 doesn't read Affinity PSD's, whether or not exported in either 'preserve accuracy' or 'preserve edibility mode'.
- Affinity Photo reads, exports and preserves multi-layered psd's ( compatible and interchangeable with Ps) but not tiff's ...

Yet Photoshop does.

Is there a setting in one program or the other that I've missed? I can't get CO to even show a preview thumbnail for Affinity TIFFs in CO's import dialog. I imported several RAW files into Affinity, made a panorama, and exported that pano as a 16-bit TIFF.

Not that I know of but I'm using sessions not a catalog so there's no import dialog - just copy the file into the sessions folder and it should show up next time you fire up CO9 ( if not immediately).

Edit:
Not sure about pano - I've never tried. Perhaps check it first with a simple single and/or multilayered file.

If I use Edit With... from CO, I can get a round trip to Affinity Photo and back via TIFF to work.

But if I create a TIFF with Affinity Photo after converting a RAW, then CO can't see it at all on import. :(

That's the way it's meant to work. 'Edit with' allows you to export to an external editor and automatically re-import back into CO9. (Lr's 'Edit a copy with adjustments')

But if I create a TIFF with Affinity Photo after converting a RAW, then CO can't see it at all on import. :(

Do you open it with 'Edit with' or 'Open with' ? (Open with is Lr's 'Edit original').
Not sure how all this fits in with your problem - I'd have to test it myself which I haven't managed to yet ..
Perhaps try using a session to see if the problem persists ?

The problem gets to be for images started in Affinity Photo and not converted to TIFF by CO. So if I have a bunch of RAWs I want to turn into a pano, I guess I'll have to import the RAWs to CO and then export them as TIFFs to open and merge in Affinity Photo. But then the TIFF file Affinity Photo created as the pano can't be imported to CO! :(

Bob - sorry but I've no experience with converting RAW's in Affinity.
Are you sure the Affinity file has been 'flattened' after converting to a pano and (b) do you get the same result if you export the affinity pano as a jpeg ?

Would like to be of more assistance but as I'm rushing to catch a plane, time is limited ...
All best to all!

No problem! Thanks for the help and enjoy the holidays.

If I export from Affinity Photo as a JPG, CO handles it fine (albeit without a thumbnail preview on import). The must just be something about Affinity TIFFs that CO does not like.

Affinity only produces flatted TIFFs. It really sounds like a CO bug.

OP is converting RAW's in Affinity, producing a pano, then exporting the TIFF.
In a session, I've no problem importing both 8 and 16-bit TIFF's into CO9 and likewise exporting CO9 TIFF's into Affinity.
Looks more like an Affinity RAW conversion/pano issue.

I understand that. However, the few app's I've tested with Affinity TIFFs or PSD's operate as expected.

I have the same problem with a RAW file converted in Affinity and then exported as a TIFF (not a pano - just the individual file). CO won't recognize the TIFF. Photoshop is happy to open it. I've entered a support case with CO as it does sound like a bug or missing feature in CO.

Cool (well not really) but now I don't have to test Affinity building a Pano.

Bob - have you tried using a session ( and copying the Affinity TIFF into the session folder) rather than importing into a catalog ?

Bingo. If I create a session and copy the TIFF file into its capture folder, CO can see and handle it fine.

Something is not right about the import mechanism. I'll amend my support case to say that.

Thanks for the idea!
