Pixel flare on 20D?
« on: April 19, 2006, 02:14:30 pm »

I'm occasionally getting odd reflections or flare in images as shown in the attached. I'm guessing that these are somehow reflections from the sensor if that makes any sense.  Can anyone tell me what's causing these and if it is possible to avoid them.  The technical details are:

6061 was exposed for a 2 secs at f8 at ISO using a 10-22 zoom
3972 was exposed for 10 secs at f8 ISO 100 using an IR filter
3924 was 30 secs at f4 ISO 400 using a 35mm lens with an IR filter in front

Thanks

if it only happens occasionally, plus the patterns aren't consistent and it even happens at f4, i'm 99% sure it's not the sensor.

i'm thinking this is probably caused by the filters you're using. check if they're clean?
also, try to shoot different scenes with the same lens, same settings and compare the patterns (or post them here so maybe we can have some more idea of what it is)

It's probably caused by your filters not having a good coating to stop reflections. Have a look at:

I have personally experienced this problem with a cheaper filter.  I can't recall the name anymore as it went in the garbage and like above I no longer use any filter on my lens unless for specific purposes.

The only time I have seen something like this is if I have had rain on the lens front element but the round areas were smaller and more diffuse.

Is it possible you had taken a cold camera into a warm damp environment and got condensation on the sensor?
