Lightroom 6 and Mac OSX, clipped shadows?
« on: December 09, 2015, 02:52:31 am »

I'm considering updating from Lightroom 5 to 6 but would like to know if there are any known issues with Lightroom 6 and MAC OSX 10.8.5 regarding clipped shadows. When I updated to Lightroom 5, I got a problem with clipped shadows in Develop Module mode. The darker areas in photos was not displayed correctly. Then I was recommended to change the color profile from a LUT-based to a matrix-based one, and it solved the problem. Is this something that also applies to Lightroom 6?

The problem of clipped shadows sounds more like an issue with a monitor and its profile, not lightroom.  which profile did you change to and from?  LR's internal profile isn't something you can change.

Hi Wayne,

Actually, I think this is a Mac OS X issue. I got help to solve the problem through an Adobe forum. Others also had problems with Lightroom 5 running on Mac OS 10.8 and up. I use OS 10.8 and I was able to solve it by making a new calibration through EIZO ColorNavigator and changed the default profile setting from the LUT-based to matrix-based. I'm not quite sure what the basic problem is but there was speculation about how the Mac ColorSync works with Adobe software. Photoshop is not affected, only Lightroom. If I remember correctly it was the RGB values 20 - 0 which was completely clipped and black.

Just wondering if anyone has encountered the same problem with Lightroom 6 or if it works differently and is not affected by clipped shadows running on OSX 10.8 or newer releases.

Never incurred those problems in any Mac running Lion through El Capitan.

Here is a tread on the Adobe forum describing the problem I encountered.

https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1365804?start=0&tstart=0

I did not discover the problem until I worked with darker images in Photoshop and saw that the shadows in the photos were brighter than in Lightroom.

I am interested in the new panorama photo merge function in Lr6 but are a little unsure if I should update just because of problems with incorrect rgb values in Lr5 I had before. I've got a good setup now where the photos look good and match the prints so I'd rather not run into trouble again.

If, as you say, you found a solution that works well with LR 5, is there any reason why you can't try the 30 day trial of LR 6, instead of seeking opinions from others which may or may not be relevant to your case?

Of course I can try the trial software but what is the problem of discussing this problem with others? Maybe there is a person here coming up with an idea of a more easy way to correct it other than changing the ICC profile type. I know I am not alone with this struggle.

LR6 and PS CC, both latest versions produce identical previews on 10.11.2 with NEC SpectraView. One must preview at 100% and do so in Develop:

Ditto for LR5 seen below. Using the Digital Color Meter, which reports what's output through the display path, they have the same values too. But with a tiny aperture, there's more 'rounding' errors in LR that PS suggesting it's the dither to the preview that we've been told is an attribute of the LR preview in Develop. You can't visually see this and the difference is 12/12/12 vs. 13/13/13 for some individual pixels. Again, I suspect this is the dither.
