wireless transfer raw images from camera to cloud (dropbox)
« on: October 22, 2015, 10:41:03 pm »

I'm going on a long trip and can't take a computer/card reader.

Lumix GX7 has possibility to sync wirelessly to a smartphone with Panasonic's ImageApp for remote control and also to send jpegs (small) to a service like flickr, twitter etc.

I do not want to go through the phone like this (no raw & no choosing the destination), so I'm asking what my options are?

I want to upload to a site like dropbox that'll store the Raw files until I get back and can access them from the cloud. and save them to, my desktop.

I don't know much about them, but are Eye-Fi cards the best, or even the only option?

Thanks
Frank

Just take more SD cards and throw the little lock once filled and store them away.  Get a nice, small weatherproof case like a Pelican #0915 for storage (I can stack two SD cards in mine where one should go.).

I went the phone route but it was slow and really eats into my data cost (Overages=$$ or throttle-downs that take hours!) with large RAW transfers.  JPEG wasn't bad, when I had a signal.

The S6 Edge I have doesn't have a removable card and only has about 30GB available out of its 64GB with the apps.  Kingston Memory makes something called a MobileLite which is a wireless drive from the phone to a SD card for storage (Phone needs their MobileLite app too).  Still, even with the small (pocket size) MobileLite, a case full of SD cards can't be beat for speed, less wear and charging of the transmit device (camera phone and MobileLite both), and the down-time needed to do a transfer, and then charging everything up again which takes hours.  Just pop in another card and keep shooting.

More cards!

Yep, a bag full of cards, but buy 100% more than you think you could possibly need before you leave.

That many cards could be an expensive proposition :-)
I'm looking into a hard drive with a built in sd card slot

How expensive is the trip?
Do you want to spend hours sitting in a hotel room transferring cards when there is a whole new world outside?

I am not familiar with the device mentioned. I have HyperDrive Colorspace 0 which is quite old now, but there are new versions.
It has a screen so that you can actually see the raw files. This to me is a must before I would delete cards.

I agree Bob. Not seeing the files on the HD would make me nervous.

I have used a Hyper for years and it's been great - until now.

I recently purchased a Sony a7R and use at least a 32 gig card in it - the Hyper will not recognize the formatting.

So now I use the WD and just have to hope that everything copied properly. So far, so good.
