What's the goal for the calibration? Most wish to match printed output. Start here, understanding that MacBook display is less than optimal for color critical editing.

You'll then need to define your needs and budget for some hardware to conduct this task. Is the Colorimeter you use with the NEC their branded unit?

The devise I'm using came bundled with a P221w Nec Monitor - sorry I'm not at my work station.  It works fine calibrating my PA227W, but will not work with my macbook pro retina display.  I was thinking about something like a Syder 5 express?  For printing or fine tuning images I will always use my NEC monitor.  What I'm saying is I don't want to pay $200.00 to calibrate a laptop screen, but I would like to at least calibrate it.  Thanks for your response.

Then it's unlikely to work with the X-rite software on the Macbook, assuming again, you have the NEC branded colorimeter. It's only going to work on the NEC.

You can't really calibrate without hardware, kind of pointless. Either get another puck, see if the NEC branded instrument will work with shareware or just leave the Retina alone.

does it look like a rebranded i1Display2 from here = http://www.argyllcms.com/doc/instruments.html#i1d ? then it shall be recognized & work with Argyll and with its GUI front end Dispcalgui ... MBP LCD panel does not (I think) have any h/w LUT, so that free combination is perfectly suits your needs

What about calibrating the retina using apples utility? 
I also can see myself watching some movies but no color critical work.

Kind of useless. If you're watching movies, is the app color managed? If not the display profile will not be used anyway.
