Dell UP2715K
« on: September 11, 2015, 03:15:16 am »

hi all I am looking for an external display for retouching work, being known that now the mid or later 2015 MBP now supports Dell's 5K I am tempted to purchase it.  I have been reading reviews online and all of them are pretty positive.  are there anyone using one here?  I would like some consumer feedbacks if possible.  thanks.  :)

I've ordered one but not received it yet, the reviews seem positive so I decided to go for it. It has 99% Adobe gamut, real 10 bit and as far as I can tell a hardware LUT so can be calibrated using the I1 Pro I have. Seems a very nice, very well spec'd monitor.
I had to buy a new graphics card to drive it though, it only has Display port connections and requires 2 display ports in MST config to achieve 5120 x 2880 res, I read an article suggesting around 1.5Gb video memory for each 4K monitor for non gaming use (which is me), so I figured to allow 3Gb for the 5K plus a bit more for my second monitor so chose an AMD W5100 graphics card that has 4GB memory and 10 bit.

I'm offshore at the moment so have to wait 8 days before I get to try it :/

Update.
I've got the monitor now and I'm very pleased with it. It does have LUT for calibration and I calibrated it using the Xrite i1 Pro. Windows 10 automatically scaled all the text and icons so the viewing experience is fine, no squinting at the screen required. LR and PS CC are fine to use on it, again the auto scaling makes all the text and icons etc easy enough to read. Photos look superb, because of the high resolution (5120 x 2880) images are a lot smaller on screen, even when viewed at 1:1 some of the photos that have been cropped don't fill the whole screen (where on my 24" 1920 x 1200 they are bigger then the screen at 1:1).
I didn't use the AMD W5100 graphics card in the end as I couldn't find out definitively if Win 10 drivers supported 10 bit and there were a couple of other Win 10 driver issues that I was uncertain with, so went for the GeForce GTx 960 with 4GB RAM, it doesn't support 10 bit unfortunately but does have 3 display ports (2 display ports are needed to get the full resolution from the monitor) and there aren't many cards about yet that have more then 1 display port.

I was considering it as I have also the 2015 MBP which supports the 5K display. It needs to display ports and that was the reason I did not go for it. I chose the Dell 32" 4K display. The 5K might have been better since the default scaling option probably would be 2560x1440 which would mean that 1:1 in Lightroom would map one image pixel to a screen pixel. On a 4K display only the 1920x1080 or the full resolution does that. 1920x1080 is very large text and full resolution is very small text. The 4K display needs only one displayport and I have the other one for my external Thunderbolt drive. When I bought the 4K display I was not aware of the screen scaling issue with Lightroom (or Photoshop) for 1:1 view. So something to consider.

Would you recommend the NEC EA275UHD (4k@27 inch) monitor for a photography hobbyist. I will connect to my retina macbook pro and probably use 1440p scaling....or am I better getting the regular 1440p PA series. I am looking for sharp text because I do use my computer a lot to write/read. Thank you

As always, the safe choices are NEC and Eizo. The NEC EA series is excellent, especially as they are now supported by Spectraview II.

Yes, I do think 4K/5K should make a big difference for text. For photography not so much.

On the 5K monitor text takes on a new dimension, it's exquisite which is something I'd not even considered before buying it. Even web pages etc look amazing, I love it.
The detail in photos is staggering, it really is like looking through a window, the Dell UP2715K is one fine monitor.
