Canon EF lenses and 20D
« on: March 16, 2006, 10:36:24 am »

Hey folks,

Wanted to get some confirmation that ONLY "EF" series lenses will fit on a Canon 20D.

I am interested in buying fixed lenses and would really prefer some older manual-focus lenses, but it appears that the mounts are not compatible.  Seems like Nikon users don't have this problem.

Thanks for the help!

Yes, you are correct. Only EF, and EF-S lenses will fit the 20D. Older manual focus glass can sometimes be used with an adapter, but you lose all automatic functions.

Just to play devil's advocate here, but what's the reason to buy FD lenses instead of EF?  Also before you go to far down that path you might try manually focusing a lens of your 20D and make sure you can do it reliably.  Remember this is a camera that was never intended to be focused manually and as such the smaller finder and focusing screen may not be adequate for manual focusing under all circumstances.
The upside is that if you do plan on buying a manual focus lens for you camera Canon's shallower mirror box means that you can buy an adapter for just about every 35mm SLR lens family ever made.

Go pick up the cheep pentax camera.  It is something like $450 at B&H.  Every pentax lens ever made will work on it.
