camprof - simple camera profiling tool for C1
« on: July 14, 2015, 07:13:19 am »

I have a Colorchecker Passport but I couldn’t use it with my favorite raw processor Capture One.
There’s a Lightroom plugin and that’s all, no other raw processor is supported. I couldn’t find an affordable and working solution that would create an ICC profile from a Colorchecker target so I wrote one.
It can be used as easy to launch extension from C1 if you follow the instructions on the download page.

You can download it here: https://peterlaszlo.wordpress.com/

I hope it is useful for others :)

There is one more free (and open-source) tool that can make C1 profiles: http://www.ludd.ltu.se/~torger/dcamprof.html

Yes, I am aware of your work and I am really happy that finally these tools are appearing. When I started to write camprof last year there was none :(

They target a different audience.
As I understand dcamprof is a cli tool with a lot of tweakable options that can be used with scanin from Argyll tools to create icc or dcp profiles.

My goal was to create a compact tool, easily usable without any technical knowledge. You launch it from C1 and it creates the icc profile after a few clicks. It corrects perspective distortion, exposure level or uneven lighting of the target. (It does not support creating dcp profiles.)

It would be nice if someone with the knowledge would check the colour accuracy for both applications.

Yes, it would be very helpful to get feedback.

I just uploaded a new version of camprof. It fixes a few issues with incorrect luminance clipping and has better gamut clipping algorithm.

You can download it here: https://peterlaszlo.wordpress.com/

"Color accuracy" is a bit treacherous thing to check for when it comes to camera profilers.

A good profiler makes a tradeoff between smoothness and measurement point accuracy to secure good quality gradients and transitions between colors. You will also need to relate to measurement errors. With DCamProf this is partly done automatically, but I'd recommend to do some manual steps too. DCamProf is aimed for users that have a special interest in profiling or otherwise is prepared to spend quite some time, reading and experimentation to achieve a great result. Although you can make a profile with a fairly simple workflow, it's not how you make the best out of it.

One of the major features of DCamProf is its neutral tone reproduction operator which can turn your colorimetric accurate profile into something that actually shows sane colors with a contrast curve applied (colorimetric profiles will make garish results with an RGB curve). This throws "color accuracy" out the window though, as it's only defined for colorimetric applications, eg reproduction work.

For reproduction work in strict copy conditions I'd recommend a 3D LUT profiler and custom targets. The colorimetric part of DCamProf is 2.5D for reasons described in the docs, and I don't plan to change that. The tone reproduction operator is 3D though. Anyway the 2.5D design limits the peak colorimetric accuracy that could be had in scanner-like conditions.

As far as I can see DCamProf is more of a specialist tool, including advanced features such as SSF profiling, supporting custom targets, flatfield support etc, while camprof aims at a broader audience, is much easier to use, is self-contained (DCamProf requires Argyll) and has more automation.

DCamProf requires Argyll
only if you want to use Argyll to prepare the data for DCamProf, which is not exactly mandatory.

Yes good point... but when it comes to free software I think Argyll is the only alternative, right?

free ?! hmmm... then I think you can get the raw RGB data using dcraw (or derived/refactored software) and spectral data (illumination/target) using /with some fine print about the supported devices and the version of your OS/ some old X-Rite/GMB software like ColorPort and/or i1Share (granted the purpose is not to avoid argyll at all - of course not, just theoretically - when you can't use paid or trial versions of something else)...

also if you happen to run into published SSF/CMF graphs (images, but not the numbers themselves) the data can be appropriated (as I was pointed elsewhere) with http://arohatgi.info/WebPlotDigitizer/
