This is a extraordinary shot, the landscape is revealed progressively (with the mountain in the background). Simple but not so simple in the end.

Thank you, all.

This photo was taken last September on the magnificent 'Svalvogar loop' that runs along the cliffs of Arnarfjörður and Dýrafjörður in the Westfjords. Very sad to relate, Magnús Björnsson, who took me on the drive, drowned 4 days ago in Aðalvík in Hornstrandir when his fishing boat capsized. His 3 companions survived. Maggi was a Westfjords man, born and raised there, and he knew every rock and bend in the area.

That's him in the first image posing in front of the house in which he was born 61 years ago, in the small fjord Reykjarfjörður. In the second image, he is on the precarious track under the Svalvogar cliffs. This section of the route was carved singlehandedly by a stubborn Icelander who got his Caterpillar out after the govt wouldn't fund the construction (more of the Svalvogar story in a future post).

That is sad news about Magnús Björnsson.

In the second photo, if I were there I would be standing on the other side of the car.

Coming from scandinavia I would translate it as "sun staff". Makes sense. I don't think we have a word for it in sweden. It's also a metal band from Iceland so I was curious what the picture would be. Very nice!

Hello Rajan,

A very beautiful photo - once again!
Sad to hear about the drowning of the fisherman- in Holland also two died not long ago- it remains a dangerous profession...
Very nice story about that road- these Icelanders are something special ! Strong and tough like their ponies.

It's very elegant, but more somber than most of Rajan's posts. To me it feels like a suitable visual eulogy for his friend Magnus.
Very beautiful.
