Sadly yes.

I am an old man who likes to take photographs

If I photograph a bridge, I am a terrorist
If I photograph an adult, I am a stalker
If I photograph the police, I am anti-law enforcement
If I photograph a child I am a pedo

It is not right, but often that's how some perceive us.  >:(

Unfortunately, many tools and approaches are used by such people to gather information for nefarious purposes. Photography is one of those tools and methods.

As a parent, I understand the limitations imposed on image taking, as a photographer, I always make my intentions fully known before taking such photos.

Really? I think that's just false. Very very occasionally, pedophiles will photograph kids in public to create a personal file of photos for their own sexual enjoyment. This, while repulsive, is not and ought not be a crime any more than any other 'thought crime'

Most of the incredibly rare cases of kidnapping by pedophiles are carried out by driving over to the nearest school and grabbing a kid.

This sort of thing is real, and when it happens it is terrible. But statistically speaking it's not a risk worth even bothering about. The parent who puts the kid in car and drives to school is putting the kid at orders of magnitude more risk of death or injury.

I have two girls, 2 and 5. So don't even bother with line of argument you're considering right now.

I understand it, but I think it's a hysterical overreaction. It's the sort of thing we do a lot of:

Here is a tiny risk that we are actually willing to control, because it means making things hot for other people. Let's do that.

.. Instead of controlling the much larger risks, which would slightly inconvenience me to control.

I think we are basically saying the same thing.

What about Robert Vickrey who spent his lifetime painting kids and shadows?

The arrow clearly represents repressed sexual desire, but it isn't directed at the child, it's directed towards the shadow, which clearly looks like an alien. Little green men from Mars will probably regard it as disgusting pornography.

I don't know but it seems not every pointy object,  such as a sharpened pencil,  represents phallus as Sigmund Freud suggests.

Robert Vickery once said the following in an interview, “Ragged shadows fascinate me. They’re sort of the netherworld, the hidden underline of the figure or object portrayed. Beaten-up old bikes may throw gorgeous, provocative shadows with meanings hidden even from the artist. A dancing figure may seem happy, its shadow menacing. ”

Now that's just sick. The shadows are clearly representative of the guillotine with the blue bow the decapitation of hope of over carporeal reality and the dissociation of hope.

I may have posted this but hey!

I did a photo shoot for an Australian Architecture teaching project. Two fifty year olds out the front of a classic Australian building taking photos. Suddenly the school bell rang, teenage school girls spilled out, we couldn't get out of there fast enough.

Cheers,

In some countries like Italy it is illegal to take pictures of minors under 12 years in public places. Bit difficult for tourists, even non-perverts.

Then again in France it is illegal to take pictures of anybody without their permission…

It is true that kidnapping children is so rare that trying to safeguard kids against it will cause statistically more longtime harm. Our oldest kid was taken to school by me on the way to work, but he took the bus home himself starting from grade 1, 6 years of age. Nothing ever happened. It is quite normal to see kids walking  to kindergarten and back home by themselves in our neighborhood.

It is true that kidnapping children is so rare that…

Sadly, "stranger danger" is by far the lesser problem.

Quote
In 2014 NCMEC assisted law enforcement with more than 12,000 cases of missing children.
Case type:

    84 percent endangered runaways.
    12 percent family abductions.
2 percent lost, injured or otherwise missing children.
    1 percent nonfamily abductions.
1 percent critically missing young adults, ages 18 to 20.

Of the more than 10,000 endangered runaways reported to NCMEC in 2014, one in six were likely victims of child sex trafficking. Of those, 68 percent were in the care of social services when they ran.

Divide and conquer/profit, there's money and political capital to be made out of trying to encourage fear and bigotry in the general population.

As a father and amateur photographer. I love my kids and fear what I might do to someone who attempted to hurt them.

I think it is rude when someone (in the overwhelming majority of cases this has actually been young, asian women) takes a stand 2 meter from my (no doubt "novel-looking") blonde kids and clearly fill their frame before snapping a picture without asking permission or even a silent eye-contact signalling that "now is the time to object".

I think it is problematic that our society attach so much shame and guilt to men and their behaviour. It is as if men are collectively guilty for whatever a few ppm of our kind do. Those striving for "social equality or "equal opportunities" seems to disagree that it is not (only) a matter of grabbing as many benefits for their own as possible, but to start judging people on their own, individual behaviour only.

I was once photographing a busy open market from an overhead balcony, at a distance of about 25m with a 100mm lens, when a female stallholder approached me aggressively to question my actions and inform me she is off to call security. I had been there for about 60 seconds.

The sad thing is that she thought those things about me.

P.S. technically there were children in the field of view, but only as part of family groups, mixed in with general populace.
