replacing the focusing screen- 5dsr
« on: June 24, 2015, 06:54:08 pm »

does anyone know of any other after market focusing screen manufacturers for focusing screen besides the place i usually buy from- http://www.focusingscreen.com

i can't see where you can remove the screen with the 5dsr though. there doesn't seem to be a clip.

i hope there is a way of doing this as i cannot see if an image is sharp through the viewfinder with the standard screen. i also have a very inaccurate view of the image when shooting with wide apertures on fast lenses (which is all i do).

Actually I ordered a grid screen for the 5dsr.   (Haven't received body yet). But I was reading the manual. And you can turn on a grid screen for the viewfinder electronically  so apparently we don't. Need to (maybe can't anyway) replace the screen like in previous Canon bodies

Hi Paul,

According to the instruction manual (page 489), the focus screen is fixed. So replacing it yourself seems not feasible. Maybe the camera can be sent to a focus screen manufacturer, for them to replace it, but then there would be no Custom Function to adjust the exposure metering to the specific screen (like other models do have). So it seems to be a major operation for an aftermarket screen replacement, and would require a competent service organization that can do multiple (mechanical and electronical) modificatons.

Cheers,
Bart

That seems seriously stupid, but maybe there are tolerance issues with replacement screens that make user switching of screens on a 20 MP camera feasible (6D) but not feasible on a 50 MP camera. And maybe they just stuck a new sensor in a largely unchanged 5D3 body. Are they expecting everyone to be working tethered, or with magnified Live View? Granted, I use magnified Live View a lot, but I do appreciate the Eg-S fine screen for handheld manual focus.

I agree, Live View and an "-S" screen are used in my 1Ds Mark III as well. Focusing with wide aperture lenses, and judging DOF, is much better. The darker viewfinder with the few lenses I use that have a narrower max. aperture than f/2.8 is not too much of a problem. Maybe they are contemplating a series 1 model, and need to create some more distinction to justify the price difference?

Cheers,
Bart

To give you an update if you are looking to replace your focusing screen on your Canon 5DS and 5DSR, this company already offers screens for our cameras. I'm going to order one today.

It's this product: http://www.focusingscreen.com/product_info.php?cPath=21_147&products_id=1379
