Thunderbolt 3 and the Mac Pro
« on: June 02, 2015, 10:42:08 pm »

Hi,

With all the justified attention to the new Phase One cameras, this could have gone under the radar :

http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/06/thunderbolt-3-embraces-usb-type-c-connector-doubles-bandwidth-to-40gbps/

The best:
1. Shared connector with USB (USB-C)
2. Actual protocol support for USB 3.1
3. Support for power.

The not so good:
1. No support for HDMI.
2. Display port  1.2

Mac Pro:
Nobody is mentioning the Mac Pro, not Apple, nor most bloggers, not even reporters (months) .  The ARS reporter refer to the MacBook pro like a possible implementation, but, as is now common, not to the Mac Pro.

If you are thinking on buying the machine I will not do so until I learn that the machine has a future.
The current machine can be improved (by example the 3.3ghz 8 core 130W has a turbo bust of 4ghz) but changing the processor architecture will not work because of socket differences.  We have tests for 3th party memory and fast SSDs (40% faster http://barefeats.com/hard200.html)
The GPUs are a dead end at the moment.

If I were Apple I will update the machine, even if not all parts for the dream machine are ready ( HBM graphics, thunderbolt 3, next generation Xeons)
Just like they did with the 15" macbook pro.

Best regards
