Polarizer cut from 6.69" to 6"
« on: June 02, 2015, 06:39:00 am »

I recently aquired NISI rotating filter holder for my Nikkor 14-24/2.8 Lens which takes 150mm / 6" filters.

Glass polarizers of this size are usually quite expensive, but I was tempted and purchase from e-bay Tiffen Glass Linear Polarizer 6.69" x 6.69" for just 35GBP.
So now I'm wondering about it cutting to 6"x6.69" and there are few things which I'm not sure:

- Is the glass of filter tempered /Toughened/? Usually this can be checked with polarizer glasses.. but this wouldn't work for polarizer filter.  Does anyone have some idea how this might be checked?
- What process should be used for cutting? I was thinking initially about laser cutting if glass is tempered, but I guess because of laser is focused light, this might not work for polarizer?
- Normal cutting process also may have problem with cutting multi layer glass /as polarizer/

So if you have any advice or idea for cutting, I will appreciate it.

Might try a place like LensCrafters or ask an optician as some have optical trimming machines that edge lenses to fit frames.

I know some rock hounds have faceting machines that also edge hard substances against wet diamond plates.

Also, look up "wet grinders" as used by stained glass makers.  Some window glass shops use those to trim edges of glass for shelves (They sell for as cheap as $100 too.).

Good luck.

I assume you are using manual focus / magnified live view, and bracketing or using an external light meter, necessary for linear polarizers used with modern AF and metering systems.

Linear Polarizer doesn't mean that you have no autofocus or metering /at least with Heliopan and Tiffen linear polarizers which I have used/.
They are just not so reliable, but for landscapes shoot usually on f8 and tripod this is not an issue at all.

Anyway, I'm looking here for ideas how to cut this filter to smaller size   ::)
