why is NC-E2 charger so BIG?

While on a recent assignment it occurred to me that the NC-E2 charger for NP-E3 batteries takes up a lot of space in my bag. Does anyone know why the NC-E2 has to be so BIG? Is there an alternative that would serve the same function?
