Springtime in Cumbria
« on: May 17, 2015, 06:27:08 am »

Out with new D810, why does it have to be so heavy?, Bluebells are just starting to come out and I am just starting to find out how to use the camera and find out the best ways of processing the files.

I think that I got the colour balance wrong. The light was very green with the new beech leaves just bursting forth. In fact the leaves were much more intruiging than the bluebells apart from their wonderful smell. I note that the back of the scene is slightly soft, not enough dof.

Nothing wrong imo with the back of the scene being soft. It gives a sense of depth?

Ken, both look great to me. I'm not certain of the geography, but I can almost picture Robin Hood and Will Scarlet having a nap in the Blue Bells!

+1 on the look. You're in the region of 150 miles out on the geography, though1.

I like the way the road 'pulls' me into the scene, which opens up nicely upon further viewing. I could almost hear the birds chirping in the canopy. Very nice.

After looking at dozens of bluebell sites I find that the colour of my bluebell shots is off, or at least it is to my eyes. So A quick change with hue/saturation. Hope you like them and thanks for the positive comments. Anyone interested, the bluebells here should improve for the next week or perhaps two. The three shots were shot one mile North of Appleby all within a few yards of each other in this bluebell covered wood of approximately one mile by half a mile.

They are all very nice. I agree with Stamper about the softness of the background; it's fine. Of the five, I prefer the first one; I like its composition the best.

Back to the Bluebell woods. This time trying focus stacking. 12 shots however the wind was blowing so everything was moving. I also shot a colorchecker passport under the trees to get the colour balance correct. I may go back again at the weekend as the forecast is good with light winds. I never realised that with increased resolution and moving to ff that I would have to worry about dof instead of my previous concerns with lack of dynamic range.

Another visit to the same location. This time armed with color passport to try and get the "correct" white balance. Spent some time removing dead branches lying around. The first shot uses focus stacking to try and get sharpness front to back ( 5 shots). Waited for walkers to come along to provide a focal point.

In a different part of the wood started playing with ICM. Couldn't get a totally smooth drop of the camera but I like the result. Now printed and hanging on the wall. The irony is using a D810 to produce a shot that could have been produced with a compact.
