You sure? They go for around £1,500

Yep.

It came in the original Nikon rigid travel case and was complete with a dedicated TC-301 2X converter.

You are right that they do sometimes sell for £1200-£1500 but, as always with eBay, patience is the key to finding what you want at the right price.

Well, I missed that one, but really stopped serious looking when I picked up a Tamron 150-600mm that has not disappointed, except it cost me a monopod  ;)

slightly outdated but very useful none the less: http://www.naturfotograf.com/index2.html

I used to refer to that site a lot.  It is still very useful although it seems to be frozen in time.  I wonder what ever happened to that guy.  He had a tick bite that seemed to cause him some serious health problems.  I don't think he's updated or responded to queries through the site for several years.

If we are going to look at a 28-300, it behooves us to also then take a look at the 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 ED IF AF-S VR (careful, there is a very cheap non-VR version that is not nearly as good).  Decent sharpness up to 200mm.  And decently light.

I agree that this is a unique lens.  It is very good for the extended range and reasonably compact.  If you can live with the aperture limitations it is a great value.  I have the 18-200mm DX VRII lens and it also performs well above expectations.

There's a few of the 18-200's floating around.  Well within my price range too.

I must say I'm still leaning towards the 80-200 f2.8 push pull.  Apparently a pro lens in it's time.  I would like to be able to use this lens for surf photography and also my kids sport, so the fast aperture is a great bonus.  I guess I'd settle for f4, but 5.6 just seems too slow for using in crop mode (so, for example, the 70-300 4-5.6 in DX mode would be 450mm; panning around at that zoom would require very fast shutter speeds).

The 18-200mm are DX lenses.  They will work on your D810 in DX crop mode, but not the best situation, the 28-300mm would be a better option on Full Frame if you are inclined to that type of lens.

I don't know anything about the earlier 80-200mm f/2.8, but know I could never live without the rotating tripod mount that was introduced on the 3rd generation rotating zoom.

I used to own the 70-300 VR and produced fine images.  I replaced it with the 70-200 f4 which is just wonderful, but expensive.  I also have a 200 f4 macro lens that I have even used for landscapes.  My good friend who I travel with prefers his 18-200 to the newer 18-300.

Bjorn Rorslet is exclusively on the Fotozones site, still dispensing information to the Nikon loyal.

To the OP: Many of us cut our teeth on the push-pull zooms and they were quite astonishing in their day and time, but I'd not give them a second glance today. I'd look for a good copy of the 80-200 Ai/s or AF-D if I were in your shoes. The Ai glass works quite well with modern cameras.

I highly recommend the Tamron 70-300 VC (Vibration Control) lens. It is amazingly sharp, and very inexpensive. Here is a sample hand held at 300mm f16. Second picture is 100% crop.
Good Luck

I ended up agreeing to buy the Nikkor 80-200 f2.8 for $370.  I decided to chose speed over more modern optics.  f5.6 was going to be too slow for my needs, I think.  If it's not as sharp as a modern zoom, I'm ok with that, as a slightly less sharp image is going to be better than no image due to a slow lens.  I'll post back when it arrives and I've had a chance to test it out.

Stopping down just a bit from wide open should improve things a lot.  Think you will very much want a hood for this.
