Switch P30 from Hasselblad to Mamiya AFD?
« on: December 02, 2009, 03:03:36 pm »

I jumped into digital MF this past summer when I picked up a demo P30 back and started using it on my 500c/m. I'm more than pleased with the quality of the output in the studio, especially compared with 120 film or my D3/D700 gear. I would love to be able to use my P30 on location and handheld, but, argh, combined with the 500c/m it's just not an effective solution.

I started looking at the Mamiya 645 AFD cameras, and the Phase One 645. Money is definitely a factor - so I doubt I'll be buying anything new. That leaves me looking at a used Mamiya + lenses. I know that I'll need to get the mount switched from the V to Mamiya mount, which isn't cheap.

Some questions:
1. Any thoughts on the Mamiya AF lenses vs. my mid-80's Hasselblad CF T*'s? Will I be disappointed, or are they comparable?
2. Is the Mamiya AF reasonable accurate in daylight? This is going to be handheld, so, don't care about hunting AF in the dark.
3. Is the 645AFD III that much better than the 645AFD II?
4. Does the P30 need a cable when attached to the Mamiya?

Thanks!

I believe that this costs something like $3000. It might make more sense to sell and buy again.

Couple quick answers Andrew.

Generally, optical resolution should be equivalent, although there is no comparison with regard to build quality. The Mamiya AF lenses are not built with the same durability in my experience. Now, as to individual lenses, keepers, dogs, the rendering, etc,, I'm sure many can weigh in.

In good light, the AF on the AFD II is accurate, but it is not fast and can hunt even when not in the dark. The III improves on the II, but not dramatically, compared to the DF. In any case, it obviously will come up very short compared to your D700, but may suffice as long as you understand the limitations.

No cable is required, the contact is electronic.

Format change is $2,500 if it is not a Value Added Warranty.

Hmm, the cost of the format change makes this almost completely pointless. Looks like it makes more sense to sell my back and start over. Is this format change a very complex procedure?

Send your back to Phase, get a different one in return with the right mount. I believe that they stock most brands, so the time should be short (except that at some point in the recent past, they were low on Mamiya mount backs; I think they caught up though).

Hi Andrew,

I would go for it!  Mamiya lenses are pretty good, sharper as Hasselblad H-lenses (Fuji) except for 35 mm, so if you have to shoot wide, go for 28 mm and 45 mm. D-lenses are also affordable and even with heavy zoom 75-150 mm you will have good results. Because of the shutter,  there is a limitation of 1/125 sec. (flash synchronization), that´s why the new DF would be better choice but much more expensive as second hand AFDs II. I´m happy using Mamiya AFDII with Sinarback 75LV,  45mm, 80mm, 75-150mmD, 210mm, Macro 120mm and want to buy 28mm soon. Try to switch P30 for another P30  with your local dealer.

I have to disagree with Davor's sharpness opinion, if we choose to use lens MTF charts to compare Mamiya/Hasselblad lenses, that is technically conclusive but not as good as shooting an image with each system then comparing the same image. From experience, that is where the opinions end and the truth lives.

The good news is there is a MF solution for every budget, new/used lenses, etc. from all manufacturers.

Take your time and evaluate what is important to you and follow up with testing. Good Hunting!
