Hp Paper-backed Satin Silk Fabric
« on: February 12, 2009, 03:38:17 pm »

A client has requested silk prints from some of his images, and I have no experience printing on fabric. Has anyone printed on silk with an HP Z3100 or Z3200? I would appreciate any feedback.

Sorry that I can't shed any light on this for you, as I haven't tried it yet myself.  Perhaps another bump to the top will help it find someone that has.  I'm interested in trying to print on silk for clients with my Z3100 and am about to order some samples of the Jacquard Fabrisign silks from Dharma Trading.  They have an extensive line of fabrics for inkjets and I know that others have been happy with their products.  I thought that I'd try the HP material as well, but can't even seem to get a straight answer as to whether it is a natural silk or a synthetic.  I've seen it described as both 100% silk and a polyester silk.  I'm not interested if it is a polyester, as I'm wanting to use it for fine art applications and don't want a synthetic.

Thanks for the reply. What I've been able to learn is that HP Paper-backed Silk is real 6mm silk fabric from China, paired with the paper backing in Germany. One thing that bothers me is that HP does not recommend sewing (hemming, hanger loops, etc.) because the "ink may be scraped off the fabric." Instead they recommend glueing. I suppose one could treat the fabric with some sort of spray protection, but then why use silk if your going to cover its natural sheen? My client wants to hang long rectangles of a printed silk fabric from rods (wood or metal) inserted in a top pocket with another rod in the bottom to cause the fabric to hang evenly. I don't believe I'd be able to trust glue to hold under these conditions. I'm still researching and I'll look into Dharma Trading. Thanks.

Same here.  Scraping of ink from the surface doesn't sound very good to me.  Where did you glean this information?  Also, the aesthetics of sewing vs. glue are rather hard to compare.  I'd only use glue if it was structural and hidden by a frame and/or mat.  Dharma sells 42" x 6' sample rolls of all of their fabrics, and sells the same ones as the manufacturer Jacquard, for a significant discount, but they don't list any swatch books on their site.  Jacquard does sell their swatchbooks, however.  I'm going to call Dharma on Monday to ask about the swatchbooks.  I'd like to order several test rolls to play with, but would rather make an informed choice.

PS:  If they are like other fabric vendors, 6mm is not milimeters, but mommes, a traditional measurement of weight.  6mm = 26gsm, and is really thin.  Dharma sells from 5 to 23mm silks.  The thin stuff, I would expect, would have an interesting translucent effect, but pretty weak dMax and color saturation.
<edit>  I just noticed on the HP site that it is actually 6mil, which is 63.5gsm.  That translates to 14.7 on the momme scale that Dharma/Jacquard use. <edit>

Just leave enough blank, unprinted fabric to make the pockets for the rods.
