I don't have any profound theoretical analysis to offer, just a personal gut reaction. What I posted reflects my personal likes and dislikes, and what I would have done to the images if I was preparing them for display. No more and no less.

Why would such a crop focus more on the subject?  I suppose the easiest answer might be "Because then the subject would be the only thing left, and there would be nothing left to look at."  But what is so special about the pattern of the houses?

I find it personally interesting to look at. The expanse of sky and flat ground do not have anything of interest to me; eliminating uninteresting elements usually improves the overall impact of the image according to my own personal criteria. You're more than welcome to disagree if you like and offer differing views; the images were posted with an invitation for comments, so I commented. Feel free to do likewise.

Man, Scott, your Sierras pictures are *gorgeous*!  I've been there myself quite a few times, and you've managed to make it look even better than the real thing!  ;-)

Just a question - how do you get those gorgeous colors?  (Vivid and beautiful without being in-your-face Velvia-bright, mostly...)  Were they taken with film (which one?), or do you use digital with some post-processing (what exactly?) to get the colors?

Whenever I see red x's I simply right click and choose view photo or whatever it says. Works for me.

I have no idea why red x's appear, it seems random.

There are even many beautiful examples in man-made things.  Could it be possible that once upon a time, man saw that natural beauty, described it as best he could and tried to duplicate some of that beauty in things he made, even photographic images?

Doc, have you considered studying composition to see if you can figure out what causes that "tingle" and perhaps make it happen rather than just letting it happen?

There are plenty of books available that would not require an art class.

To be honest no I had not thought to go off on a course to find out what makes the tingle - its always just been there - like the hairs on the back of you neck go up!

I may well have a look at some books though - any suggestions ?

I learnt the basics and technical side from a big hard copy book of Photography by Kodak that was given to me about 17/18 years ago.
Great ideas then that still hold true.

Thanks Bernard, I was looking at your photos, very nice I could only see the thumbnails but you could see the deapth in each picture. My wife and I will be going to China in a few months, I can not take all my gear as we are picking up an adoptive child. so most of the baggage will be diapers??? and the like. So the Canon G5 will be buzzing. I hope I can get a few in your class and I mean that.

I really say it's ugly to make Jonathan to understand the some people get hurt,,for he's commen sometime.
But I'm no a photographer I'm trying to be one.

I can handle legitimate criticism of my work, and have no problem admitting I'm wrong when someone shows me where I went off track. Check the sensor design idea thread for an example. But just making up random unfounded criticism is rather pointless, and not conducive to enhancing one's reputation as an insightful critic with something meaningful to say.

You have some nice stuff on your site, but there's a few things you should take care of before advertising your site to the world:

1. The photos at the top of several pages are not the correct pixel dimensions for their display size, and are unnecessarily pixellated as a result. Browsers do a terrible job of resizing photos; never give them an excuse or opportunity to do so.

2. Pay closer attention to color rendition; if you haven't bought a monitor calibrator, do so immediately and reexamine your photos. For example, in the Australia section, there is an image of 5 kangaroos, and they are a bluish-purple color I'm quite skeptical has any resemblance to their actual color. And in the Colorado USA section there is an image (#12) with white clouds with bright pink highlights that are clearly some kind of processing artifact.

Darn it!  I was able to see my post from my computer at home and now they are red x's. I am still able to see sfbay 420 posts and evryone elses. Any suggestions? The size of my photos went from 640x512 to 28x30 all by themselves. Any web gurus out there who have any ideas why?

Thanks Scott - This is my first foray out into the "real" word as it were - and I was a little worried after about 18 years of taking photos for friends and my Brother in laws wedding I was prompted to invest in a website and Pro level printer (Epson Pro 4000) & and a Eye one display calibration unit etc - a must - after a few stuff ups  :laugh:
So after about a years worth of personal study into the Epson world of printing - reading magazines - getting online - and talking to Epson - going to the one day seminars etc etc .... here we are online and into it as it were.

I have no formal study of design or graphics with the exception that I have liked to sketch and do technical drawing in high school.

Now I play with Photoshop and my Camera. (Occasionally still sketching)

The last 18 years have seen me go from a Canon 100Fn 35mm and an Ixus10 24mm film cameras into a G3 from Canon and now from a 300D into my latest 20d - (On order and still to arrive.) (Thanks to my greatest supporter - Sally my wife)

Having seen some of the effects deliberately done by Andres Bonilla and some of your work at www.light-quest.com along with some of the other people in this forum gives true inspiration as to what can be achieved.

This is not a smoke blowing exercise but a fact in my own opinion.

Support and crisp comments bad or good can help everyone get better "In their own style"

This forum is full of excellent people and - at the moment free from some of the rubbish I have seen on other forums I no longer frequent.
