But that part is positive as well.  After all, having the freedom to attend to your own business and life's needs is what America's about.  Individual choice exemplifies our country's character.  Or at least it used too.  Now, I'm not too sure anymore.  We're becoming too dependent on the government who will fail us in the end, in any case.

As I said - that's a political choice. You want "freedom", go for it, but don't moan about the consequences. I prefer the freedom to keep on living a bit longer even if it means I have to observe some simple rules.

Drunk driving...why should government decide when one drives or not.
Smoking on airplanes...why should government decide when and where one smokes.
Stopping at intersections...why should government tell you where and when to stop.

And it goes on.

If you superimpose them, it is quite likely that a significant number of individuals are in in fact smarter than the 50 governors. its not about stupidity, its about self interest which is what a lot of people unfortunately tend to prioritize over the common good....
taxes come to mind, if it was left up to the individual there would not be much to spend on roads, eduction, healthcare ...or the military (where the US likes to spend its money)
smoking on planes (or public places) is a great example someone already mentioned
unions come to mind.....unless you would prefer child labor
guns are one thing that obviously should be much, much more controlled, freedom has nothing to do with being able to carry around war machines that can take out an entire Walmart in a few minutes...

That's a great question.  Obviously, we draw lines all the time.  But in the Covid case, the government is destroying the livelihoods and businesses of millions of people.  Their lives are being destroyed.  How will they support their families? How will they provide shelter for their families? How will they feed their kids? Their lives are being turned topsy turvy. That's a lot different than the minor inconveniences of stopping at traffic lights and not speeding.  Meanwhile, the hypocrite governor of California orders everyone to stay home while he goes out to eat with his wife and important political supporters.
