I still have my Hosemaster in the studio. There's a place for painting with light, be it additive or subtractive. I just shoot multiple images and mask them on layers in a PS file. Same effective solution. Though not quite as real time, with years of experience shooting this way I rarely reshoot images for the composite.

Just trying to understand this...

So for example, a usual, basic setup for shooting a wrist watch that has the main light source creating a direct specular reflection on the glass that's covering the face of the watch would require a "gobo" to block the reflection on the glass, while the rest of the object and/or tabletop is usually lit in one way or another.

With your projection technique, you could project white (from Photoshop) onto a giant translucent scrim and then SUBTRACT by painting with black wherever you want, and/or project black and ADD light precisely wherever you want by painting with white?

Thanks for all the great feedback! The Infinite Gobo Award sounds good to me.

@ K.C. Haha I love the hosemaster. People say its outdated and only has one look, but in my opinion coupling with digital shooting technique provides endless possibilities, like you said!

@T-1000
Your example is pretty much correct except I tend to shoot a watch using diffused light as much as possible, however I do "gobo" much of  this light out.

That's one of the coolest and most original techniques I've ever seen.
