Scottish Locations & Workshops
« on: March 23, 2011, 12:09:46 pm »

I have to head back over to Scotland this fall.  I'll be in Aberdeen for a week or so doing some research and I'm looking for suggestions about locations to shoot.

I plan on heading up into the Cairngorms to revisit the back of Balmoral around Tomintoul and possibly back to Glen Coe & the Rannoch moor.

Any other suggestions for areas around the great glen?

I'm also interested in any recommendations for 2 to 5 day workshops or safari's that people might recommend.

I'm looking at departing late September, early October and the dates are still flexible.

I will have a vehicle and I'm not adverse to hiking in a few km but the last time I was over was 25 years ago and this is my 50th birthday present to myself so I don't want to rough it too much ;-)

Regards,

Bruce

The West Coast - Fisherfield, Skye, taking in the Trotternish Ridge, with Storr & the Quirang. North of Ullapool, Assynt is a wonderful area, chock full of photographic opportunities. If the weather gods are smiling. Like as not they'll just sit there laughing, as you get a soaking in beautiful mist & cloud, rain & wind. But when it's good, it's very, very good.

And if you're in Glencoe, the Clachaig Inn is worth a visit.  ;)

Workshop suggestions:

Earth's Beauty Tours

Bruce Percy's workshops - The Art of Adventure Photography

Both do one-to-one tours, so I'm sure they can help.

Adding to Bill's comments, consider the Waternish peninsula on Skye.

Back on the mainland, try Applecross - and the Applecross Inn is worth a night or two.

I took an Ian Cameron Glencoe workshop last December and enjoyed it very much.  He offers workshops in different locations and also one-on-one sessions as well:

There were 6 students (including myself).  Fee includes lodging and dinner at a local hotel.  Ian drove us to all the locations and they were easily accessible, he'd just park off the side of the road and it was usually less than a 200 yard walk to the photo sites.  The locations are pretty well known, and I was shocked how close to the road many of the viewpoints are.  However, if I went back there by myself, I'm not sure if I'd be able to find the right pull-off sites.

Here are some of my pics from that workshop:

Well edited, naturalistic photos, especially the cloudy scenes. So often you see oversaturated Scottish landscape images.

Torridon and the Applecross peninsula are good. I'm off to Ullapool and the high north west for the first time on Monday. London-Inverness $250 round trip on Easyjet, then 90 minute drive.  This b+b is $40 per night for a single, but there's loads of choice - http://www.bvegb.co.uk/ . You can fly direct to Edinburgh or Glasgow from New York, much nicer than the London airports.

i like your #14 particularly for the fine detail near in  transitioning to little or no detail as the eye moves away.
