Real world external battery experience on MacBook Pro's
« on: January 20, 2011, 04:01:33 pm »

Hi guys,
A lot of people shoot tethered here so thought it the best place to ask.

On my older gen 15 inch Intel Macbook pro (removeable battery) I get about two hours use max out of a new battery on my shoots.
This is a new battery never run off the mains, except to charge.
Interior (Exterior) tetherhed shooting. 60 meg files, lightroom or C1 running, Interiors stuff mostly.

Obviousely not enough for a full shoot where no mains is available so instead of getting two or three extra batteries what are the real world results in this kind of situation with small external batteries like the hypermac's?

Thanks,

Marc

I shoot tethered with an Axiotron Modbook - basically a Macbook (not pro) converted to a tablet using stock battery i get about 3 -3.5 hours if Im careful.  Just a side note the Firewire port is powering my Digital Back the entire time as well as it has no power source.

I usually carry 2 spare batteries and the newertec 2 battery charger

Regards,

Dennis

Thanks Dennis but I'm really asking here specifically about the MacBook pro with external batteries, not internal batteries on it or other laptops. I know about those already as that is what I use.
Thanks,
Marc

Hi Marc

I work with external batteries called  'HyperMac' I have 2x of them. I can shoot all day with the large battery (MB 15" about 2years old)

I don't shoot tethered but I run an additional external back up drive through Capture One, so the battery is powering 2x drives.

I usually shoot on a PhaseOne P65+ or P30+ back so we are moving a lot of data. I can shoot anywhere between 10 and 30 gigs per day typically.

I also have the small 'HyperMac' battery which I will take when we fly somewhere.

The batteries are fantastic and no I don't receive any money from them to say this.

I hope this is helpful.

Best

I also have a Hypermac battery, the MBP-150, and plan on getting a second one of the same size.

i have a new 17inch macbookpro, and when i got a ssd for it the battery life went up considerably.
when i use my battery geek (the largest size), reasonably bright screen, but screen dim on quickly, i can get 6 hours, sometimes more out of it.

in comparison, my 1 year old macbook 15 unibody get 1-2 hours without a batterygeek.

Newest MacBook pro 17" runs with back connected app. 3 hours.
I got an applejuize from Peartree that will run me another 3 hours.

NEVER buy from battery geek, they still owe me 400 us.
I ordered a battery from them and got good communication till they kept pushing delivery forward till it was over the 30 days of money back from paypal since then I never heard from them again.
I did get in contact once under another mail addres but when I made myself known it was done again.
Very bad company.

Hi

I use a Power Gorilla to recharge my MBPro and a supplemental power source.  It has the added benefit of being able to recharge my camera batteries as well and fairly quickly.

I also use the Solar Gorilla to recharge camera batteries albeit more slowly.
