OMG! C1 deleted my shoot!
« on: November 13, 2010, 02:43:05 am »

Long story short.

I went to upload all my P30 files from my last shoot. I realized after the import that there were old image previews
from another shoot loaded into the directory. I deleted the directory to redo it and pulled the card out halfway through
I put the card back in and IT'S BLANK! I checked it on my back and it's ALL GONE!!

I restored the deleted directories but there are no photos in them aside from the files that I uploaded earlier from my
Canon.

I am seriously having a heart-attack. HELP!!

Don't have a heart attack just yet.

Download an image recovery software program, I have several and they all work fine but some are faster or slower.
In this case however it's important that you don't do anything with that card.

Download the software and read out the card, as long as you did not WRITE anything to the card it should all still be there, even when formatting all the data is still there.

Same goes for PC/Mac if something like this happens, run the software and it will find back your data, but make a big cup of coffee or watch a movie to relax because it takes some time.

Maybe a tip, when shooting you can often write to two locations at the same time.
Use an external HDD and use that as backup during the shoot, disconnect it after the shoot and keep it safe.

This is ofcourse when shooting tethered.

When shooting on the card I often first download the card before trying to import it into Aperture or C1.
That way I always have a spare copy.

On the road we do the same, one HDD travels with me all the time (even when the laptop is in the hotel).
When going back home one HDD is in the luggage and my laptop is with me.

Backups are so often forgotten until it goes wrong.

Check the session's trash, if you haven't emptied it then the Capture folder should be there

As a note I never pull a card (or any other media) out while copying data, never...

When i put in the card there were all these previews from an old shoot in the import dialog.... a shoot that
wasn't even processed/imported into C1. I hit import thinking they would get replaced by the proper images
but no... the old images were copied to the new directory.

I downloaded Photorecovery Pro 2010 and am currently recovering them.

Restoring the trash only brought back the old shoot images

Capture One is weird... i wish there was an alternative

1. No - Capture One did NOT "delete your shoot".
2. Don't worry - you're almost certainly going to get your images back

Based on your description of events it sounds like you formatted a CF Card in a Canon, shot it in a Canon, then shot it on a Phase One back without formatting it in the Phase One back. This severely screws up the format of the card such that the Phase One images are being written (and reviewable) in the digital back, but not in a way that the computer/desktop-operating-system can understand.

Fortunatly every time I have seen someone do this they were able to recover nearly all, or all, of their images using Data Rescue 3 from ProSoft. Probably other recovery softwares would work, but I have specifically seen Data Rescue 3 work in all three cases where someone forgot to format their CF card after shooting with a Canon.

So do NOT do ANYTHING with that card until you've downloaded Data Rescue 3, and done a "Full Scan" of the CF Card (the words may have changed in version 3 - I last used it at version 2, but "Full/Thorough/Complete Scan" as opposed to a "Quick Scan"). The filenames may be screwed up, but the images themselves should be completely fine (as long as you haven't written anything to the card after the Phase One images.

Bottom line - always format your CF cards in the camera you use them in. This goes for Phase One, Canon, Nikon, Sony, etc etc etc and is independent of which raw processor you use (Capture One, LightRoom, Aperture, Raw Developer etc etc). It's an awful idea to mix and match without formatting in-camera.

Buy enough CF cards to actually dedicate to each system. I have 4 for my Phase and 2 for my Sony and they will never have a relationship together if you know what i mean. It is very dangerous to mix cards as folks forget to format each time going into another system. CF Cards/SDHC cards should be treated in a process that never ever changes your routine from formatting to shooting and finally to downloading. Make it the most boring thing in your life as the most repeatable thing in your life. Never change one element of the whole process. Over the years i have seen way to many issues when folks start changing there ways or go off there routine. Stay the course as one President said maybe the only smart thing he said as well. LOL

I totally agree with that.

There is an interesting video of Chase Jarvis that I recommend because it is really the way I see the things: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-6EQo6it7Y
