Within Edinburgh there is the Salisbury Crags. You can't miss it. Arthur's seat at over 700 ft is worth climbing on a dry day that isn't windy. That whole area is a photographers - imo - wet dream. Start at the Parliament building at the foot of the High street and walk onto the Crags from one of many paths and explore!

Salisbury Crags definitely has some rather beautiful views.

Around Edinburgh, the Pentland Hills have some fairly interesting terrain and gorgeous views of the city. Within a short drive of Edinburgh you could travel to Falkirk which has a stunning looking boat lift. Alternatively over the Forth Bridge you could travel to Fife and catch some of the cute coastal villages.

Just make sure, depending on when you're coming to Edinburgh, to bring warm clothes. It's a beautiful city but very cold.

Are you only interested in landscapes? Edinburgh has a lot of interest. There are the obvious places like the castle and the Royal Mile. Calton hill for sunsets. Off the beaten track there is "urban" Leith. The Forth road bridge area. Try a visit to North Berwick. A half hour journey on the train.

For the weekends: the Trossachs is quite nearby, as is the area around Loch Tay. I can recommend Glen Lyon just north of Loch  Tay; near Ben Lawers there is a nice nature trail with lots of flowers (depending on season of course).

Wish I was there too...

The weather has been horrible recently. Freezing cold, chucking down with rain and windy. Typical Scottish weather really.

If you have a car and free weekends then I'd definitely recommend a trip north over the Forth Bridge then east along Fife's coast.  Of particular photographic interest could be the east neuk fishing villages of St Monans, Pittenweem, Crail and Anstruther.  They are approx 1 - 1.5 hours from Edinburgh and all within 10-15 minutes of each other. St Andrews is a bit further, better known but in my opinion not nearly as interesting to photograph. The Forth rail & road bridges can be photographed from either side but I like the views better from North Queensferry on the north side. There's a stone jetty there by the pub that affords great rail bridge views. I'm not that familiar with the capital photographically but what's written above sounds excellent.
