Repairing the Canon LC-E4 charger?
« on: June 12, 2009, 12:33:58 am »

hi all.

I left a battery in my Mark III with the camera turned on in Standby mode, and one day when I went to use the camera, discovered that the battery had gone flat.

I placed the battery into my LC-E4 charger and a few moments later, the charger's LEDs all began to flash. the charger was unable to charge the battery. I bought another battery and the charger was unable to charge that one too. my friend's LC-E4 was able to charge both batteries.

I wonder if the very-flat battery somehow over-stressed one of the components in the charger.

Canon has confirmed that the charger no longer works (both battery compartments), but their policy does not permit them to examine and repair its components.

the charger is very expensive to buy. does anyone know who might be able to examine the components of the charger and repair it? hopefully, it's as (tongue-in-cheek) -simple- as replacing a capacitor or transistor.

unfortunately, the charger was less than 2 years old, and only used once every 2 or 3 months. the components could not have been very high quality to fail so 'quickly'.

cheers,
Gregory

Repairing the Canon LC-E4 charger?

You could check the consumer guarantee laws there. Many countries have clauses mentioning reasonable use. Here I have successfully had goods replaced after several years by using the phrase "not fit for the purpose for which I purchased it". Otherwise I'd find a friendly repairer and gaff tape the thing back together. The brick for my laptop is still going fine like this after a year.
Good luck, David

Is Canon's policy not to repair the charger because Canon did not manufacture the charger? If that is the case try sending the unit to the manufacturer for repair. If that is not possible have a technician open it up to see if the internal components are identifiable. If they are the tech should be able to make the repair.
