Epson 4000 and Ilford GoldFibreSilk
« on: January 07, 2009, 09:48:02 am »

Hi guys.

I am trying to use the last ink in my old Epson 4000, and was wanting to print on the Ilford Gold Fibre Silk, i have a couple of A4 sheets, that I thought i would put through, but I am experiencing problems loading the paper through the sheet holder. Am I suppose to load it from the back, or is A4 just too small for such heavy paper?

thanks

Henrik

PS: I think I have sorted out my issues with the HP Z3100 :-) thanks! everyone

I can't realy help with your 4000 but I can tell that my 3800 has some problems (head strikes) with the rear manual feed but is fine with the sheet feeder (same Ilford paper, from A4 to A3+). The 4000 (and the newer versions) do have a better and more sophisticated feed system than the 3800. I'm a bit surprised that you struggle with the Ilford paper - even with A4 sized paper sheet.

So, you might be right and the paper is too small (A4) for your printer.

Thanks Francois,

I'll keep working on it.
it would probably help if I moved the printer for better access to the back :-)

thanks

Did you ever resolve the issue?

I am having a problem with the 8.5x11 paper tray in my 4800. The Gold Silk paper constantly jams.

I am wondering if changing the platen gap to wide would help. ???

Hi Harley,

I have to load it from the back, and just gently help it along, you can kind of feel when the printers starts to take hold of the paper, and then i just gently help it a long (gently pushing, but not if know what I mean) otherwise I get paper inserted too deeply.

I hope this helps

Henrik,

FYI, changing the platen gap did not help.

I started loading from the front, single sheets and it works fine. Loading is quite easy and does not risk scratching the paper. I tried the back load, but I found the front to be less effort and more consistent. It would be nice to use the paper tray, but it is not worth ruining all the paper.

Thanks for you reply. Much appreciated.

You might want to give the rollers a clean by passing a thick sheet of plain paper wetted with highly diluted household ammonia or an ammonia based cleaner such as Windex. Often these glossy papers are not actually jamming. Rather, they are resisting the rollers attempts to grab them and the printer thinks they have jammed. Ensuring the rollers are scrupulously clean helps a lot.

Using GFS on my 4000 I load from the top.  For sheets larger than 8.5x11 there's usually no problem in having them load straight.  Sometime for thinner media or loading 8.5x11 from the top can be a pain, but I've found that gently applying even downward pressure until the paper is about 1/3 loaded helps.  The GFS profile for the 4000 is unusable in my experience.  Image is way too dark and the shadows block up badly.  Since colors are ok I simply developed a lightroom preset that gives me a good print.
