Mamiya Announces New Medium Format Digital Camera System
« on: October 15, 2008, 11:12:25 am »

Hi all,

As a Mamiya user, I saw this announcement this morning.  Looks to be a partnering with Leaf.  Wonder if Phase One is angry now that it appears to not be an exclusive deal for AFD III iterations.

uh - can someone explain this? and they didnt even make a presentation @ announcakina?!? this seems like a decent deal considering the ad they're running on the back of PDN - $14k for a aptus 65. also seems like this will start to push the other back maker into a corner as far as price - just my humble opinions folks...

Wow! Certainly gives me pause with my recent P30+/Phamiya purchase at over $20k.

It's just a Mamiya AFD III with a Leaf back on it. I don't see the conflict in that. The Mamiya bodies can accept various backs and this is just a package deal.

Pretty good package deal, I would say.
Phase One did the same thing not too long ago with their refurbs and an AFDIII body kit, if I remember right.

Mamiya and Leaf have been putting together digital packages for a VERY long time.  I just don't understand why they have to come out with these packages and give them a name, like "DL28."

Why can't they just say, "We're selling you an AFDIII and an Aptus-II 6 back for $15K!  Come and get it!  Everyone's stone-ass broke, and the economy sucks, but $15K for a camera isn't that much, right?..."

Hi
Here are the specs of the Leaf back on the RH side of the spec sheet. This is a very good deal since it is the Leaf Aptus-II 6 digital back. Has a capture rate of 1 f/s plus the new LCD screen on the back.

You knew this was coming because Leaf and Mamiya are kind of related through marriage with the MAC group.  Also Leaf and Mamiya have been working together for a long time.

A lot of Leaf Reps carried mamiyas as demos.

BTW:  Today I was in Calumet SF and they had the Leaf AFI with some Leaf back on it.  Don't know which one because the sales guy was busy messing with his cash register, but that is a pretty camera. Why they can't get that thing in an area of prominence I don't know.  It really should be in the middle of the store in it's own jewel case.

If digital medium format is going to stay expensive, then make it look expensive.

They also need to get that camera in the hands of people that shoot strong and start showing some knock your d*&k off photographs.  No flash on the beach with orange sunsets, but really beautiful award winning work.

That'll sell it.

Human nature would make you think that of course Phase One is pissed. Here Phase One has the gumption to pick out the Ugly Duckling Mamiya at the high school prom, and then dresses her up, and sends her out for Botox and a Gym Membership, and then slides a ring on her finger which enables Phase to slap their last name on the front of the Mamiya, and then, here comes Mickey Rourke, the old boyfriend, back from the dead and smelling like cheap whiskey, slinking in like it was just yesterday, like the love still existed, and now Rourke wants to sneak off the Mamiya body for a roll in the hay at the local Days Inn.

I'm not in any way taking up for Phase One, but if I had paid a stack of invoices for Mamiya Botox and Tummy Tuck, I'd lock her in the basement and not let her out.

Maybe Phase should put a chain around Mamiya's waist tied to a radiator. That way she can't "sin", you know, like in Black Snake Moan.

Interesting times... you've got to wonder why anyone would want to commit to a given direction these days.

All this looks very amateurish to me. Phaseone should have bought Mamiya, or Mamiya should have bought Phaseone, but as of now who could think that their alliance is set in stone?

The Hassy bride looks better and better every day that passes by, besides it is also cheaper. Phaseone's business model is built on the concept of upgrade, which means that the customer buying into a P65+ today is actually investing its future on the continued existence of the company. The consequence is that the stability of Phaseone as a company should be of concern for all their potential customers, and that Phaseone should take the right decision to show a bright and stable future. This Mamiya annoucement puts a deep dent in the deal IMHO.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were some hard play going on between Phaseone and Mamiya, and the Japanese partner was stuck in a position where they had no choise but to look for an alternative to put some pressure on Phaseone... just guessing obviously.  Having been doing business in Japan for years, I am yet to see a single instance of a Japanese partner stabbing me in the back if I didn't mess up first...

Cheers,
Bernard

Hi
This is a win win situation for Mamiya. As it has been pointed out the MAC group in the US is the agent for Mamiya. They also are the agent for Leaf. Phase One with the marketing of there camera (AFDIII) always said it was going to be an open platform. Anyhow $15,000.00 USD for this camera & Leaf Aptus-II 6 DB is an excellent price. Very fast recycle rate of 1 frame/second!
