HP z3100
« on: September 07, 2008, 12:47:26 pm »

Hello all,

I'm in the market for a new printer. I currently have a Epson 2400 but I'm so tired of it clogging and wasting ink I want to upgrade to a wide format printer, thinking the HP z3100, and wanted to ask some questions about it.

Do you think it might be replaced soon with a newer model at Photokina 2008 in like 3 weeks? SHould I wait? I take it if there is a new model it will be more expensive than the old one.

Where's the best place to buy? I found it http://www.costcentral.com/proddetail/HP_D...49768/extended/ at for a cheap price, but is this company a reputable company? and authorized dealer? They're not too bad at http://www.resellerratings.com/seller4825-p2-s1-d1.html

THanks!

Trending will show that all manufacturers will update their product line to keep up with client demands, advances in technology, and their roadmaps within a product cycle and or life.

The Z3100 is the same as all others. Epson already (as usual) announced their new printers the 7900, 9900 which follow the 11880 on down, all great printers. Canon upgraded their line up to the x100 series which had many improvements especially in inks since the release of the Z.
So an educated guess would be an update in the near future. IF it is at Photokina it would not be too soon.
Pricing normally stays about the same , only the older models largely discounted.
The current Z3100 is a very capable printer that has some drawbacks that may or may not affect your needs. Are the your needs going to be better met with a newer series based on more or less the old feature set? If so the price will be higher for the updated models, which will taper off as all the printers do over time until the next inevitable replacement cycles occur. These days it seems around two years, but there are some surprise printers too, such as when the 3800 came out.
This Photokina is bound to be a very interesting one , with lots of stuff to amuse us, and amaze us. When the Z3100 came out it amazed us, as it was the launch of the future printers want list.
I'd say wait for 'Kina, it's not far off.

I agree with Neil.  Then you will have the benefit of the latest information and can make your own decision by balancing features versus price versus reliability for all of the manufacturers.

Neil is also correct that in terms of features, the Z3100 blazed the trail with many new features that no other printer offered at the time.  The question is whether Epson or Canon will follow that lead; when they will do so; and at what price.  The thread on the new Epson in this forum appears to indicate that it might be significantly more expensive than the Z3100 because it is aimed at graphic shops and a different industrial client base.  If so, it might be another year before Epson releases the consumer equivalent of the Z3100, with those features, and at a similar price.  So you need to judge how long you want to wait.

Then there are questions related to tech support and reliability, but that is already covered in another recent thread, so you can read that debate there.

I got my Z3100 in Late January: I like it alot. I have not had major problems. I really like the output (but I tend to use just one particular Hanemuhle Satin Rag paper). I use a Powermac Mac computer (circa 2005)

That said: Unless, dire need - I would wait till Photokina before buying - to see if a newer model is announced. If so - you could choose between the newer model , or a possibly heavily discounted Z3100.

Hi,

Most likely you compared several makes/models and came to the conclusion that the Z3100 fits your needs. Is there stuff the Z3100 doesn't do and you need it?

There is always the danger that you wait forever, maybe a Z3100 upgrade is around the corner, but maybe canon, epson or others may improve on that again and it is better to wait to see what the compitition does.....

A few month ago I bought a printer, it covers my needs and seeing the output I can't hardly imagine that I will trade it against a newer model when it is there....others may disagree but I am very pleased with current inkjet technology and have a hard time to imagine what could be improved on my current printer. (except cheaper inks and paper.....)

I wouldn't buy a large format printer from the lowest online supplier.  That's just me.  I want to buy from a shop that makes their living selling to people who use large format inkjet printers.  They're more inclined to work with your printer manufacturer to help you through any problems that might occur.  I bought from [a href=\"http://www.dtgweb.com/]DTG[/url] based on recommendations from guys who print for a living.  Their prices were competitive.  Shades of Paper is another company I would trust.

One more bit of advice.  Based on my own experience, as well as others, my conclusion is that the Z3100 does not work well with windows.  Again, search all the postings and don't take my word for it.  There have been serious and systemic failures reported related to using the printer with Vista and XP.  Now, today, someone else is having problems with the HP drivers and XP.  Again.

See this thread for an example of the problems:

http://luminous-landscape.com/forum/index....t=0#entry169828

I'm sure that some people running XP or Vista have managed to get the 3100 working OK.  The problem is the great variability of windows systems.  It is a crap shoot as to whether you will be in the winners or losers column with the Z3100 if you are using windows, since the development team in Spain replicated, but did not solve, these problems.  We just don't know why the printer works on some windows PCs and not on others.

At the time that I was having these problems, others in the forum reported that US tech support flatly asserted that the Z3100 would not work with Vista.  And actually told someone to return an HP PC with Vista loaded!  Obviously the 3100 does work with Vista, because some have been successful in that regard.  It only illustrates the crap shoot and whether you end up in the winners or losers column.

Bottom line -- my sincere advice -- after great pain and hours of headaches -- is to buy the Z3100 only if you are using a Mac.  Then you will at least avoid the problems reported in all of the postings related to windows.

Just fyi... I've been running the Z3100 with Windows XP Pro SP2 and SP3 for 16 months.  I've got a friend running his on Vista.  No serious problems in either case.  I did have a case of a self-inflicted wound or two but that's my fault.

I must admit that HP could do a lot better with their software that supports the Z though.

About two months ago I installed the latest (then) driver, HP utilities, APS on a fresh Windows Vista 64 bits system. It runs. Done the same on an older Windows 32 bit XP pro system about a year ago. No problem. The first installation about 18 months ago on another 32 bit XP system worked as well.

I have some complaints on how the driver cooperates with Qimage but in my experience it worked well on Windows systems.

Same here, HP z3100 Windows XP SP2, Vista Ultimate 64 - no problems other than a minor spooling annoyance related to a mistake I made in my XP installation.
