Anyone switched to Blue Ray for long term archive?
« on: December 23, 2007, 01:52:16 pm »

I'm currently using two 1TB NAS drives for storage of all my images, but I'm quickly running out of space.  A lot of these images are of performances I took several years ago and I don't expect to be needing to access them anytime soon (if ever again), but I do want to keep them.

I don't relish the aspect of burning dozens of 4Gb DVDs, but I was wondering about the new Blue Ray technology and if anyone has switched to it for long term archiving?

I was thinking that I might get some relatively inexpensive 250GB drives and moving all these seldom accessed images to the new drive and also burning them to two sets of Blue Ray DVD's.  Then I'd put the HD and one set of the DVD's in the firesafe I have at my house and the other set of DVD's in the safe deposit at the bank.

Perhaps the hard drives are overkill?

For long-term archiving, I'd wait til the Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD format war settles itself out, or at least until dual-format drives are available. And it's a bit soon to know what realistic longevity expectations you can expect from the discs anyway. As a short-medium-term solution, fine, but long-term, not yet.

I still think external HD offer the best option. The 500gb versions offer the best value and if you make two copies of each drive, I think you're pretty safe. Just verify and reburn everything each year on the drives.

Blu-Ray is new and therefore very expensive. Speed is another issue.
