ARCA-SWISS R to be released
« on: August 07, 2007, 10:39:26 am »

After the Photokina, it was very quiet about this camera.("the pancake camera")
I had to chance to have a look back then at the prototype, and have to say this could be be a great contender for Cambo, Alpa and others.
Two versions are to be released, a 6x9 and a 4x5, both of course digital-ready.
Anyway, I was very excited about this toy, as a Hassy V user i still have to decide what wide-angle to choose (after the CamboDS, the Flexicam seems to become my toy). I expected a price between the Cambo and the Alpa, but was hoping it would be nearer to the Cambo;-)
First official info appears in this shop (still waiting for an Arca-Swiss website to appear...maybe this year???)

http://www.galerie-photo.net/index.html?la...target=d45.html

(i'm not affiliated to these guys...don't ask;-) )

Price is high, but this seems to be a hell of a camera, that probably is worth the money...for those who can afford it. Hoping to read some reviews soon.
These toys give me hope, there still is a place for small companies Like Alpa, Arca, Gottschalt and Gilde who have excellent quality.

Thanks for posting. Information on this camera has been almost impossible to come by, and considering that they're supposedly shipping in September, you'd think there would be all kinds of information available. I'd love to see how bellows integrate with the body. And I'd like to find out what the E-module is. And I'd like to see how they accomodate longer focal length lenses (the same way Alpa does it, with long mechanical tubes, or do they use some other method). Lens selection certainly looks spectacular.

In the text in the referenced document they state, "Useable lenses with bellows kit:  55-400mm)

I talked to the U.S. Arca-Swiss rep and she gave me some interesting info.

She said the bellows mentioned in connection with the R are the standard Arca-Swiss technical view camera bellows. In this case, the R body simply becomes the front standard in one of their technical view cameras (for example, their F 6x9 view camera), and the back attaches to the rear standard. When used as a stand alone camera, the back attaches directly to the rear of the R body via an adapter.

She said they don't have any product literature yet. She said she would be surprised if it shipped next month, but that she was expecting to get literature by late next month.

I've been waiting for this camera for a while as it seems to be a perfect travel camera - much better than a travel compact from alpa as this has shift. I've been dreaming about a compact camera with shift and maybe tilt in a really small package. Arca Swiss r seems to really fit the bill, but alas the price is just beyond me. I'm glad they published the prices already (so I can scratch this from my list). Now when is that fotoman Dmax going to come out... I've been waiting for the specs on it.

I've also been toying with the idea of using the front standard of my arca swiss 6x9 already and maybe I should just continue with that because it does seem that the arca swiss r is based on it... the front standard that I have is the one with the multimetric orbix so it already has tilt built right in. It also has geared rise as well.

Hi David. I don't remember her name, but I found her number on the following page (bottom left is the Arca-Swiss USA contact information).

I haven't tried contacting the people at PrecisionCameraWorks. They might know something, but if the U.S. rep doesn't have any information to give, I doubt they do either.

Jonah,

The Alpa SWA have shift, it's still small and a perfect travel camera in my opinion.... I also have a TC but use the SWA instead now, since it can shift

This looks like the camera I've been waiting for.
I was thinking of going the Alpa route, however this Arca-Swiss will do the trick.
Pricing is similar to the Alpa.
Cheers,
WR.
