Lightroom 1.1
« on: May 21, 2007, 10:55:25 PM »

Hello all. I attended the lightroom seminar today with Scott Kelby in Boston and he had Tom Hogarty speak for about 20 minutes on the FREE updates to lightroom.  On his comupter it looked like it was called Lightroom 1+ but Scott referred to it as 1.1.

Anyways, he didn't give us a time table but these are the new features that he showed us:

1) Easier to merge libraries - he actually called them catalogues and you can export images or a subset of images as a catalogue and they should merge seamlessly with existing libraries.  He didn't get into too much detail but looked like it solved a lot of the issues with merging separate databases from different computers.

2) Sharpening - Tool now has amount, radius, detail and masking.  Only viewable at 1:1 but definitely at least as good as USM.

3) Clarity Slider - In addition to Saturation and Vibrance, there is a slider called "clarity".  This looked really neat.  It might have something to do with saturation but he described it as a large radius unsharp mask like thing and it looked like it really worked well on the image he showed us.

4) Can categorize presets now in every module.

5) You can edit your metadata presets instead of having to redo the whole thing if you made a mistake or wanted to change something.

6) Spraypaint can - They got rid of the keyword stamper but added this tool.  This is like the stamper but you can just "spray" or apply it to a number of images very easily.  And you can choose to spray a number of things such as keywords, flags, rotations, etc..

These were the main things he told us about.  Again, no concrete date but sounds like it'll be very soon and will be a free upgrade.

Hope this gets people excited!

#3 would be the local contrast adjustment many have been hoping for.

Spray keywords? That almost sounds as bad as Steve Balmer describing the Zune as "squirting" music.

Any ideas when v1.1 will be released? I'm lusting for the database synching feature set.

I'm really longing for the first and second features that you've described, and the third sounds quite neat as well (I've done light large-radius USM in PS ever since I read about it on the LL). This sounds like a very worthwhile update; unfortunately it couldn't be around a few weeks ago when I really could have used the merge feature after a prolific photo "vacation."

Talk is cheap. At least you can use it (I presume).

Well, google's cache hasn't

[a href=\"http://66.102.9.104/search?q=cache:4Q9DEvN8sTIJ:www.scottkelby.com/blog/2007/archives/211+lightroom+1.1&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1]http://66.102.9.104/search?q=cache:4Q9DEvN...en&ct=clnk&cd=1[/url]

I don't know why he removed it when the information is up on every blog and site anyway..

Those features sound very interesting!
I can't wait for the database merge thing, this is crucial for anyone who carries a laptop during travel or field work and wants to merge it with the stationary one.

I hope they've made some speed improments on the processing and that they've improved the threading of the userinterface.
Being a former RSP user one is acustomed to working much quicker.
When I upgrade my computer I want to get a speed increase, not get the same raw processing speed I had with RSP on my old hardware

It's great to hear that this will be a free upgrade too!

ACR 4.1 is out today, as well as a new DNG converter... so you can go play w/ a few of the new features, anyhow
[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=120329\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]

Thank you!

It is like a little bit of RSP in ACR.

Looks really nice so far. Looks like you now can really do some capture sharpening in lightroom/ACR
[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=120379\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]

It will be interesting to see if Michael and Jeff discussed this possibility in the upcoming video tutorial. Primarily, if either (or both) of them feel that they can use the 1.1 sharpening functionality instead of using PK capture sharpening, thus bypassing a need to fly out to Photoshop for that step... (or not)....

I don't suppose anyone has a feel for when to expect 1.1 to hit the street, at this point? (I'm probably going to get slapped for asking that...  ).

Well, having just read Jeff's PSN article on ACR 4.1, I may have half answered that question, anyway.... http://photoshopnews.com/2007/05/31/about-camera-raw-41/

Sounds like he figures the ACR 4.1 / Lightroom 1.1 sharpening handles the capture sharpening duties quite handily (well, that was my interpretation, anyhow). I'm on the road w/o RAW files handy to play with to make my own assessment, so...

Just FYI: Michael & Jeff do in fact discuss and demonstrate this and other new features in the upcoming free 1.1 update to our LR Tutorial. BTW this will be posted to the 'Spare' placeholder file of the LR 1.0 Tutorial as soon as 1.1 update is publicly released.

That's Chris...he's quite the lush you know. Learned a little about the art of consumption down in Antarctica with Chris. Although Seth and I usually closed the bar each nite, Chris was almost always there too...working on editing tape.
