Oregon in June
« on: April 11, 2007, 11:58:11 am »

Will be in Oregon for 2+ weeks in mid-June, and looking for some new locations to go shoot.  I have done the Gorge, Rockaway Beach, and Cannon Beach.  I am already planning to go to Crater Lake, and possibly Mt. Hood depending on the weather.

Is it too early for Rainier?  Are there any wildflowers out at that time?  I'm also willing to go to Eastern Oregon or up into Washington.

Any out of the way places that won't be too snow-covered?

thanks.

Mid June is one of the best times to visit the mountains in the Pacific NW. You will likely encounter snow on some of the higher trails, but the spring snow here is ideal for hiking/climbing.

If you are considering travelling north to Mount Rainier, you may want to look into Olympic National Park as well. Climates ranging from rainforest to glaciers can be found in a relatively small area. The Olympics are also home to the most diverse plant life in the state.

I highly recommend the San Juan Islands in Washington. I was there a few years ago in June. The weather was as good as it gets there. San Juan Island (and possibly the other islands???) is located in a " rain shadow." It gets a lot less rain than Seattle and other parts of the state. I spent 3 days on San Juan Island alone and it was barely enough, but I ran out of time. Next time, I will allow at least a week for the San Juans alone and visit 2 or more islands. It was awesome!

Have a great trip!

In my limited experience, the flowers tend to be relatively elevation dependent.  Unfortunately, the big shows at and above timberline on Hood and Rainier don't get going until later in July.  Mt. St. Helens might be a good option for flowers in June.

You can take advantage of this fact by planning your hikes to cover as much elevation as possible. By hiking three or four thousand feet you cover months of plant development.
