P30+ or H3D with 31MP
« on: March 13, 2007, 06:09:30 pm »

OK - almost ready to pull the trigger on an MF system - any thoughts
on a H2 with a P30+ -vs- H3D with a 31MP back?  I heard 'somewhere'
they are the same chips, so it will come down to software?  My workflow
will be Lightroom. Thanks. Most of my shooting is stock lifestyle.

Steve,

Still don't fancy the Contax/P30+ combo, have you tried the H2 at 1/60th ??

Yep - I like the Contax, I use to shoot them with film, I feel I need that leaf
shutter/sync speed, I cannot handhold the H2 at 1/60 due to the mirror
bounce, however I have shot with it yesterday using the 2 sec. self timer,
mirror goes up, waits 2 sec then the shutter fires, not the best for moving
people but actually works well for "my shoots".  I can also press one button
that is easy to reach for a mirror lockup too, then shoot.

I can't argue with the sync speed, but it's the one thing i don't need.  The 2 sec delay is someting i use on the Contax all the time when tripod bound, however not really necessary for the handholding as 1/60th is easily achievable.

Have you considered an older Hasselblad 500 series w/ a P30+, or do you need the auto-focus?
Don't forget the Mamiya 645 AFD also.  It's a bit cheaper and lighter than the H1 or H2.

don't forget mamiya....they have a deal with phase right now...
also you can use the same back on the 645 and the RZ via adapter (1/400 sync, rotating back,...) i have the P30 and use it on 645 and RZ...works great....

also i think the straight comparison would be between the P30 and the H31....the P30+ will give you one extra stop, a better screen and improvement in color and noise compared to the P30 (which i actually find hard to believe....the P30 is pretty much perfect already...)
nobody (as far as i know) has seen any P+ files, so the claims are not proven yet.....but the way phase usually handles these things...i would be surprised if we won't be blown away......so i would at least wait to see some files and compare, if you think the hass is the way to go....

Hasselblad has started offering a deal.
$5k off H3D-31 or 39 with trade-in H1/H2, plus additional $3k off if you give them another M.F camera, that's total of $8000 off for a new H3D-31 or 39 with 80mm lens, new body & viewfinder. That puts H3D-31 at $18k. I an quite sure Phase one P-31 or P31+ is more than that @ $20k plus the camera & lens. P31/P31+ uses the same sensor as Hassey H3D-31. U decide on your need for higher ISO, ease of Capture software against Flex...... The difference in price buys a lots of Tech help or even a different software.
If you don't have an old H1/H2, than buy old one from eBay. Still one yields a substantial savings.

A P30 is $16,990 less $1000 if purchased in a Mamiya 645 AFD mount - and that's list price.  You can do better right now since the dealers are clearing their inventory to make way for the new "Plus" backs.

If you found a H10 on EBay and traded it in on a P30+ it would cost $14,990.00
The same type of trade in on a P45+ would cost $23,990.00

Thanks Chris, That IS a very good price break offered. Periodically these offers are supported by all the camps of MF backs, but really when one calls the distributer they don't volunteer the breaks. It would be in best interest if periodically people like you should post the offers, as lotsa people are still on the fence, especially on this forum, so please, do post the current prices as the offers do vary from disrtibuters to distributers.

sean..this is the normal phase pricing...they always take their own backs back and give a substantial discount....the newer the back the more you get....makes the stepping up much easier to digest...
i bought my P30 for quite a bit less...and that was 5 months ago.....

Current manufacturer trade-in values on the backs we sell:

Leaf
Aptus 75: $1,510 - $9,395 (depending on DB model)
Aptus 65: $1,640 - $3,300 (depending on DB model)
Aptus 54: $905 - $9,620 (depending on DB model)

Hasselblad
H3D-39: $8,000 ($5K - any DB model or H1/H2 camera) plus ($3K - any MF camera model)
H3D-31: $5,000 (any DB model or H1/H2 camera) or $3,000 (any MF camera model)
H3D-22: $5,000 (any DB model)
CF-22/39: $5,000 (any DB model)

Sinar
Sinar eMotion 75: $8,000 (any DB model)
Sinar 54H: $5,000 (any firewire-based Sinar DB)

These are manufacturer trade-in promotions on the above models. Dealers themselves can also add to this trade-in amount via an additional discount just like Phase dealers do.

And yes, Godtfred, we'll take that Lumina.

Are you telling me one could get a $ 8000,- discount on Sinar eMotion 75, if one traded in a Leaf Lumina bought for $150!

That is a mighty fine deal if the lumina counts as a DB, too bad I'm stuck in my HB-39 system (but Im not complaining about that... only the price I paid.    )

most accept ANY dback for trade in...they want you to buy into their system, so you step up with them....and some dealers will tell you to go on ebay to get a cheap back....and some even have some old backs laying around that they will trade in for you (for a small price...of course less the savings..)...

One of the biggest things with MF digital is the software - I am pretty sure you can download demo versions of both the Phase and Imacon/Hassie applications - why not test drive a little and see what you see?

Actually, downloading Flexcolor requires a serial number, but for anyone that wants to take it for a spin, you could contact me offline and I'll get you a copy, along with a sample image to work with.
