Epson 3800 retail question
« on: January 21, 2007, 02:10:26 pm »

Will this printer ever be sold in the larger retail stores? Ex. CompUsa, etc?

I don't have a dealer in my city.. the nearest dealer is 80 miles away and they are perpetually out of stock. I would like to purchase locally if possible.. Will this printer only be sold through pro photography outlets or will it go mainstream?

Thanks,

Andrew

Perhaps.  I checked Compusa and they have the 2400 available on-line:  Compusa Epson 2400.

So I guess you could go to your local Compusa and ask if they could order for it for you.  Compusa has a "deliver to store" option.

Hi, the 3800 is only available through Pro dealers, or directly through Epson when there is enough supply.

I've checked with CompUSA both in Houston and Denver.  They do list the 3800 PRO version for "deliver to store" pickup.  So, if you want to pay several hundred dollars extra for the RIP, then CompUSA could be an option. Their staff wouldn't speculate if the standard 3800 would ever be offered.

I also wanted to deal with CompUSA because their warranties are usually reasonable and I like the idea of carrying in the printer, rather than dealing with shipping these monsters.

Bill:

That printer is not listed on the compusa website, was this an in person visit or perhaps by phone?

BTW, the epson website is out of stock today.

The printer really is not that big---the box was more reasonably sized than I expected and my shipping was free.  See if you can find one of the dealers that will drop ship.  Altho' on rereading your post, I think you are referring to taking it in for warranty work.

Andrew, I made a telephone call to both stores. Got the same answers in December and this month.

Diane, yes, I was primarily concerned with the convenience of warranty work. In the past, CompUSA just gave me a new printer, off the shelf, when shown the problem was not user error. I was expecting to wait on a diagnosis/repair, not walk out with a new printer.

Out of curiosity I went by CompUSA today and spoke to the lady in the business department. It took awhile but she said that she would be able to make a special order for the 3800 non pro edition through one of their supply lines (ingram micro). She had to look it up in a data base, etc.

The problem now is that everywhere there is a backorder situation. I did speak to the guys at the Epson booth at the PPA Imaging USA convention a couple of weeks ago and they said that the supply lines should be flowing with product in about a month.
