D5 or 1Ds Mk II, which gives best A3 print?
« on: February 09, 2006, 12:35:26 pm »

Imagine an identical shot taken with both a D5 and a 1Ds MkII. Both shots are then printed on an Epson A3 sized printer such as the R2400.

The D5 seems almost designed for that specific job, at 300 ppi it gives an image 14.6" x 9.7", which drops onto a sheet of A4 with a constant one inch border all the way around. The 1ds Mk II, with the same size A3 image, is at 342 ppi.

So how does the Epson respond, which camera gives the better print? And assuming stable printer technology, would final print quality be any different with Canon's next generation 20 or 22mp camera?

For what it's worth, I can't see a jot of difference between the D5 and 1Ds Mk II when printed to these dimensions, but maybe that's my ageing eyes. Are printers defining the limits of digital photography?
