Maybe. The NPS removed the most difficult obstacle a few years ago after one of their ranger's rolled a Jeep on it.  I did it with a few friends, one of whom drove a bone stock Toyota 4Runner, and he did fine although there was quite a lot of bottoming out.

Hey Brett, are you talking about the stepup on Murphy's hogback? That was the worst spot I remember.   Off camber, in a turn and big clearance issues IIRC.

Yep, that's it. My buddy in the stock 4Runner refused to drive it so I had to do it for him.  I warned him that it might take off his running boards and he didn't care.  Luckily I'm pretty experienced in off-road driving and I was able to get it over the ledge with only a couple big hits to the skid plate below but his running boards remained intact.

I knew that had to be it. I remember thinking when I did it (on a MTB) thinking my old Outback could have done most of it, sans that 1 spot. lol.

So how'd they "fix it"?

I haven't seen it so I don't know if they bladed it or filled it in.

Ah. No worries. We're you going clockwise or counter-clock wise when you did that?

Counter-clockwise. I like doing it that way best as I don't find much interesting on the west side except Taylor Canyon so I'd usually rather get it out of the way at the beginning.

Counter-clockwise.

When I had aspirations of riding the white rim in a day on a MTB, which was before I had a child, I had planned on doing it Counter Clockwise. My plan was to park a car at the pit toliet at the base of the Shafer trail, and start from there. That way, I wouldn't have to do the roughest climb of the trip when I was totally knackered. You also get to "coast" down the from the turn off on Highway 313 to the bottom of horse thief.

Maybe one of these days I'll be ambitious enough to give it a go.

Personally I would do a day trip to Goblin Valley (2 hours from Moab) instead of time spent on the white rim trail.
If you went to Goblin Valley you could then drive down Wild Horse road (turns off just prior to the state park) approx. 8 miles to some purple mounds (similar to yellow mounds in Badlands N.P. but purple), great colors with the San Rafael Reef in the background.  And, the San Rafael Reef is photogenic in itself.

If hitting Monument Valley on the return trip you could take 89 (or 89A) on your drive to Moab, West through Kanab, head North to hwy 12, hwy 12 to Torrey then hwy 24 to Hanksville and hit Goblin Valley first, this route adds 3.5 hours over the more direct route to Moab.

Of course this drive could add a whole lot of other stuff like Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef N.P.

On your drive to Monument Valley to could go West from Blanding and see Natural Bridges National Monument, then South on 261 to Goosenecks State Park.

There is just far to much to see in Southeast Utah.  Anyways just throwing other ideas out there.

Thanks, folks! TonyB, thanks for the reminder on Goblin Valley.
We head out tomorrow AM and Dad is like a kid at Christmas!

We had a great time! Thanks for all the suggestions. Weather started out rainy, but cleared into the week.
The attached is from the first day on our way to Moab.
PS Bret, sorry your gallery wasn't open; would like to have stopped in to say hi.
PPS Dad did fine, even out to Mesa Arch.

A nice pano, David. Good for you and your dad. I go in April - starting to get a bit excited.

Couldn't resist another. Even with the overcast, rich colors in the cliffs and calcite layers.

Really happy to hear you and your Dad had a good time.  Yeah, this time of year is typically too slow to warrant keeping the gallery open.  As nice as the weather has been lately it's almost like full-in tourist season so we probably should have opened our doors but we're in the middle of moving into a new house soooo....no bueno.

The Gooseneck, DHPSP
Not an original view, but it's mine :) I think the mists make it.
The other, Island in the Sky, flashed for a few brief moments.

The second one is very good. I long to go back there.
