Samples from Arches NP
« on: December 16, 2014, 06:33:57 pm »

I continue the attempt of teaching myself image processing.  It's a struggle.  Your suggestions, please.

Your processing appears rather restrained and natural. A bit more contrast might add extra pop.

The b&w one seems to need extra exposure overall, to get more feather detail, and to brighten the image overall - it looks a bit too "muddy" gray now.

The biggest improvement in landscape photography comes from shooting at the edges of the day, i.e., mornings and evenings, avoiding the harsh mid-day light that you seem to have here.

Thanks for the feedback.  These were definitely shot in the late afternoon before that great slanted light came around.  I was just passing through the area and had many miles to travel so I wasn't able to take advantage of the best light.  I'll work on them some more.

Yeah, travel constraints, family duties and mealtimes all seem to work against the really good light too often.

The 2 first are well processed for me, nothing to change.

My suggestion for the 3rd as I find the background a bit distracting.

Thank you.  For the sake of my education, let me explain a little about how/why I chose to process the raven picture as I did.  When I made that particular photo, I, and lots of other people were photographing in the area.  The raven flew to that perch and gave us all the "eye" as if he were saying that it was OK for us to visit, but we needed to be gone when the sun went down.  In my mind, I saw him as a guardian and titled the shot, "Raven Watch".  It was shot in color, but I changed it to mono and liked it better.  I chose to include the taller background to try to show the immensity of the environment.  Yet, obviously, the raven is the subject.  I do like your closer cropped version.  But when you say the background was "distracting", what made it that way for you?  Is it due to the shallow depth of field yielding a blurred background, or just too much empty space above the raven?  I appreciate the feedback and it helps me greatly.

In the upper left part, you have some shapes of bottles.

This is what is distracting for me.

No, I'm not an alcoholic ;) ;) ;)

Have a Nice Day.

Double post?!? Are you sure you're drinking only milk/soda or non-alcoholic beverages? I seem to remember that in Belgium you have some excellent thirst quenchers.

The images all work for me, I am a sucker for rock forms and could spend hours
in the second image area, the b/w works well for the raven. great work

Hips, yes!

A few years ago, the Rochefort 10 was awarded as the best beer in the world, but I prefer the 8, almost 10 alcohol degrees  ;)
