Thank you Edmund, I did have an angle choice and the reflections chose this one for me, it was the engineers I was after, just that touch of human interest, for once I'm pretty happy with a shot, usually they are better in my head.

At the moment I see everything in squares and as an exercise in cropping - maybe with the space you cropped off on top you could bring the engineers into the center somehow like this - with more space above one could have a larger part of the left fuselage included with the roundel, or probably the whole large tail.

Your image is so sharp and so well lit that you could certainly go for a web version cropped like this, and probably a decent print.

I also like square format very much.  But in this case I very much prefer Chris's original panoramic rendition.  For me, the receding symmetry of the airplanes is what makes the image.

That's a rocking great shot, Chris!

I completely agree that Chris's rendition achieves the aim of the shot as a panoramic overview.

My (visual) remark was just that one can crop an interesting side-bar out of this picture, which has a completely different, directly engaged, emphasis.

There doesn't have to be ONE image from one capture - there can be several reworks (and hopefully several sales).

In fact one of the reasons for using a hirez system is precisely that croppability that allows one to repurpose images.

I'm obviously not going to teach someone like Chris how to compose a shot - but I can point to the fact that he might extract an additional subproduct.

I would appreciate Eronald reinstating the crop he posted, it adds to the discussion, which is appreciated from all.

I have gone back and re-processed as I would, if I had taken a longer lens or the converter I had the day before, and taken a second shot on the engineers.
I have also posted a small jpeg of the original out of camera, with film profile std and Profile P45+ Flash WB. I processed using Flash Easy Grey as I rather like that at the moment, I thought seeing the original, which was constrained by spectator ropes would also inform. I had the panorama in mind and repeated the shot from behind the the tails but the light was much less favourable at that angle.

Eronald inspired Square  :) Which I think is what he meant, and I agree, given the file size that allows multiple images , I hope of worth, to be extracted.
(hand held BTW).

Chris, thanks for your indulgence. As Klaban points out, the -reposted- square doesn't really work. On the other hand, it does show us that the sky can be an actor in such an image, and that we may not need to show *all* the planes to get the concertina effect. So it may be time to crop another rectangle with more planes and retouch that sky in some way.

I find I need to play with my own images, crop them etc, and see what I should have seen on site, in order to actually then be able to compose on site later.

One of the notable facts about this forum may be that we've all been around for some time, and that we're all pretty good at the technical aspects of getting the shot. But in order to grow, it may be time for the more technical of us -like me- to rattle the bars of the creative cage a bit more. Cropping is one way of getting something for nothing - a bit like the fun one has in one's younger years of eating a whole meal at home from the snacks one has brought back from a party :)

I had a friend, an old guy who since committed suicide, he'd been employed as the art director for a bunch of soft-core porn and also some arty picture magazines eg. Lui. He taught me that one can take carefully composed images and ruthlessly crop their beautiful perspectives into detail shots that in the end have a much stronger impact. It's easy to hang on to that image one saw and captured, but sometimes the crop is stronger in the end.

Thanks Eronald, last rattle of this cage:

I do agree the sky is very important in the shot, it adds to the "story".

A 5 image stitch from a Pentax 645z + 150mm/2.8 lens - tifo display in Seattle, WA, USA.  We lost the match, but I created 8 more of these in the 800MP to 1,800MP range from this vantage point and 7 others around the stadium in a compass patern.  Stitching with 51mp images sucks - especially when doing multiple rows of live action.  Still, I want to try it with an 80MP setup with a 200/210/240mm lens :D  And a Mac Pro to stitch it together...  The image is of the Washington State flag, done holding up solid 30"x30" pieces of plastic.  Lots of planning in the layout and execution of this.

I'd love some help editing down my (far too many) candidate images for a future book of Bodyscapes. All shot on medium format.

Since I don't want to monopolize this thread perhaps you could provide the feedback on this facebook thread. Or here if you prefer.

I recently attended a wedding in Jackson, WY.  The Tetons looked beautiful as we drove past.

Grand Prismatic Spring, Yellowstone.  Panorama taken with a 645Z and the 28-45mm lens.  Crop of the center tree line.

August when we last had "fun".
Lots of changes since then, much quieter here I feel, who knows what the near future will bring?
Last throw of this dice?

Hi Chris,

Thanks for posting. In recent time I have shooting very little with my Hasselblad V/P45+ kit as I now have a Sony A7r, that I am exploring now. The A7rII gives similar image quality as the Hassy kit. Also, it gives me full T&S with all Hasselblad lenses.

But, I enjoyed shooting with the classic V-system/P45+ kit, so I hang on with it and will hopefully shoot some more nice images with it, too.

Just to say, I see a tiny advantage to the V-system over the A7rII when pixel peeping, but I don't feel I would see that on any pictures making it to the wall.

Best regards
Erik

Hi Erik
Enjoy is most pertinent, I have tried the A7 series and did not enjoy using it. I can see why for commercial use it is a very useful tool but I shoot for pleasure, mine mainly, and that was not working for me. I don't expect that to influence anyone at all nor should it. I still shoot lots of B/W film, 35mm, again because I enjoy doing it, no one pays me to do it and that's the way I like it.
I am delighted it is working for you, I never felt you fully jelled, or perhaps produced what you wanted, with the 'blad and now going back to it occasionally with no pressure it will bring you more satisfaction. That we have such choices available is the blessing. Keep well.

Hi Chris,

I feel I am a bit fallible to enjoying shooting the latest kit. Right now I have a HCam Master TSII that gives me T&S for my Hasselblad lenses on my Sony A7rII.

Another point is that I often shoot on vacation, and that means flying to places with carry on limitations.

What I think, right now, is that the P45+ still yields a tiny advantage in image quality over the Sony A7rII. But the Sony can do a lot of things…

I guess that I still enjoy the Hassy V/P45+, but I feel that using it is more about handcraft than image quality. The reason I bought it was that I had a few MF lenses and I wanted to make full use of them. And that reason still applies.

Here is my latest image with the P45+

Hopefully it is not the last one… I honestly don't know. It is about making images I like and having the right gear at the right place at the right time. But all that doesn't help if I don't have the urge/lust to take pictures. Motivation is a great part of it!

Best regards
Erik

Hi Erik, I have admired your photography from afar. I think that the autumn shot that you have posted here is gorgeous -- luscious yellow/oranges and the deep reddish-brown seen in some Scandinavian rural areas and the faded reds and pinks of the smaller trees. The reflection adds depth to the vision you have captured. Might I suggest that it is worthy of posting on your website.

Kind regards,

Sean
