Can the z3100 cut canvas or should I use scissors?

Scissors. The cutter may be able to cut some canvases, but it would dull fast and a failure while cutting may cause some serious issues with the carriage/belt/encoder-strip.

I manually roll out the paper and use a mat knife along the front edge of the printer.

Yep, roll it out, trim with scissors. The cutter won't be any good with canvas

+ dajaka.
Simple to use the front edge as a guide. Tough part is getting the cut in the canvas started, if the knife isn't extreemly sharp.

Scissors. I accidentally turned on the cutter with canvas on my Z3200 and it jammed the cutter. Fortunately, I was able to un jam it with  no harm to the machine.  But, I never want to go through that again.
