Devil's Bathtub B&W - Hocking Hills
« on: June 24, 2014, 07:50:08 am »

Devil's Bathtub near the upper falls in the Old Man's Gorge at Hocking Hills State Park.

Canon 6D, Canon 17-40 f/4 L - f/13, ISO 100, 0.6s - contrast and color work in CS6; B&W conversion in Perfect Effects 8 (Illford Pan F 50); additional contrast, dodge/burn in LR 4.

Critiques welcome.

Beautiful spot and a nice B&W.
The texture is excellent.

The composition is a little odd though IMHO and I feel like I'm missing something where the water exits the pool.

Hard to say having never been there..

Lovely tonalities. I'll bet it looks good in a print.

I'm also a bit uneasy with the bottom of the frame but it's a minor issue, the rest of this photo is a winner.

Chopping-off the top 1/5th moves the brightest area away from the centre

The shot is from a small stone bridge looking almost straight down. I'll post a pic.

I agree with you - it's the part I struggled with that the bottom of the frame. But, that's how it is. I'm looking forward to making the image again and seeing what I can tweak.

Thanks for the feedback, all.

Lovely and rich B&W conversion. IMO, cropping the top part towards a square frame, compensates for the "exit" water point in the bottom, makes everything a bit more balanced.

I like the treatment. But something about it brings to mind one of those optical illusions where the elements could either be receding or advancing. Perhaps this lends intrigue.

Here's a view from upstream. Not much in the way of water flow on this day. The tub's outlet (drain?) is just out of my frame, under the bridge.

Fair enough.

Still, what a beautiful place - the shot above put everything into perspective.  8)
