I haven't posted any pix here in a while, so I think I'd better get at it.
Here are four taken in a walk around the Brookline Reservoir the other day, including two variants of one location (the "cropped" version was done in camera, not in LightRoom). I'm curious which of these you discerning folks like better.

Some of your shots remind me of fishing nets. You definitely chose to give these an abstract viewpoint.

Whenever I see a carpet of newly fallen leaves, I can't resist photographing what I call a "tapestry of riches." I think most of us feel the same way when it comes to autumn foliage. But it is not always easy to make a scene with so much colour into a reasonably successful composition. And when the light gets harsh, I experiment and try to weave the remaining shapes into my composition. This is one.

Eric, at first sight I thought that the cropped tangled veggie image was my clear favorite, but after more study I can see the charms of the uncropped version. I might have to look at them a few more times to come to a firm decision.

John, I think you succeeded in your fall color composition. I struggle with the same problem, and end up rejecting most fall foliage shots; as well as letting a few get by that probably should have been rejected. Letting them sit until winter before final judgement facilitates objectivity, but then who wants to see autumn colors in winter?

John, one thing I always enjoy about your "abstracts" is that while some might think they are in some sense "painterly," in fact your departures from literal reality make use of strictly photographic techniques, such as camera movement, etc., etc.

The recent ones succeed very much in emphasizing the essentials of the scene, quite beautifully.

Nice set Eric. I opt for #2 because I think the added context and color provide a bit more psychological depth (if that means anything).

I think I agree with you. I took that one first, and then zoomed in for the closer version.
Maybe Russ is right: Cropping doesn't work, even if done in camera (unless it's your first choice of view).

This lovely, antique-like lamp has been through the mill. When I first bought it 30 years ago, everyone wanted it. Especially when it would cast warm glow from the tungsten lights. In the last few years, most want to throw it out. But since I discovered it is a goldmine for helping me "see", I hope it will render more possibilities in the coming years.
