It looks like the bark of some kind of wood. But on the other hand it also looks like a piece of art framed with nothing more than paint that was allowed to run and form patterns.

If you are referring to my last post, your second guess is close. It is a detail from the Water Wall park, a 64-feet high sculptural fountain in Houston, where 78,500 gallons of water runs across 80,000 square feet of interior and exterior horseshoe-shaped walls.

Thanks for the comments, Arlen. Very nice macro. I find macro very hard work. Shift your focus or position only slightly and everything changes, especially the focal point. Something will be in focus, alright, but not what you want. What focal length did you use for this? I want to by a macro for my Pentax, but have to consider the 1.5 crop factor.

John, you're right, macro work has some unique issues. But some unique pleasures as well. The creamy smooth out-of-focus backgrounds that can be had are one of my favorite things about it, and I love playing around with those. The other side of it--getting something sharp where you want it to be--can be challenging, but still rewarding. For many years I have used a Canon 100mm macro lens, first on a cropped sensor, and then on a full-size sensor camera. Particularly for insect photography, one of my "specialties"; including all the insect photos in my book BugWater. But I'm experimenting now with an Olympus 60mm Macro lens that I just bought to go with my Olympus E-M1 system--e.g., the image I posted above. I'm liking the lens a lot, but with the 2:1 crop factor, when focused at 1:1 macro ratio it has a shorter minimum working distance than I am accustomed to--and a very narrow depth of field at that distance. On the other hand, at 1:1 it fills the frame with an insect half the size of what it takes to do the same with the Canon system. It takes some getting used to.

Haven't been here in about forever - life keeps getting in the way (I know, I know - 168 hours in a week...) and this was the first thread I picked. TEN pages of new images!

Mike: quite intriguing. algae in stream or river?

Peter: Most of my work is in-camera motion movement, unless otherwise stated. The firs is a simple circular motion; the second is a double exposure with two downward motion shots, slight offset. Depending on how fast the shutter speed you may need a little sharpening. Excessive blur, timing and placement of subject are the biggest issues in this kind of Photography.

Early spring is one of the best times because you get both colour and simpler designs in natural subjects, like trees, flowers, shrubs, etc, oft against a simple green background.

Chris, you got a really good mix of abstract and structure. It makes me look at it a long time, trying to figure out what is what; and interesting shapes regardless.
