So, John, please tell me exactly how you waved your camera around to get that swirl!

Ha!
Yes I sometimes resort to PP to create images.

But most times it's simply not necessary. Here is one for the caterpillars.

Very nice.

Taken, of course, with your caterpillar lens.   ;)

Difficult to make "complex" work, but you've pulled it off with style!

See, one can quibble about what constitutes an abstract, but this image definitely has an abstract feel with abstract like shapes. So much to photograph in this scene. Well seen!!

Doesn't have an abstract feel to me, geometric yes, graphic maybe but I don't detect any abstraction not that the lack of a label diminishes a photograph in any way.

Your view reinforces my point. The image does have recognizable elements, but it is fundamentally about an abstraction of shapes, colours and lines and not about the things themselves. If we go the route of only unrecognizable elements, most of our efforts will be be unappealing and unrelatable to most people. But I certainly take your point.

These are not necessarily great images but I want to show them because I tried one of the in-camera "filters" called "Bold Monochrome." Based on some trials, I think it does not reproduce bw well on subjects that are already highly contrasty. Such as white sidewalks and black elements on sunny days. It completely overwhelmed the whites and blacks. I am going to try this filter on moderately sunny days, hopefully with just soft shadows, and see how the monochromes reproduce.

As ever it's only a personal opinion.

Is this abstract or a portrait?

This must be abstract

Of course I recognize the elements in both images as aspect of the human form. I agree that the second is 'more' abstract than the first. However, I view both images as abstract in quality, where the object was to reduce the image to its simple elements. Love the images by the way. First rate.

I agree completely.

I'll add that OPGR's rooftop and these recent images fit the "purist" meaning of "abstract," which shouldn't care about recognizability. I am quite comfortable also with a looser definition which would include any subject that is interesting but unrecognizable.
