I've been playing with ICM for the last week. Although I'm starting to get a somewhat better feel for what to expect with different camera settings and movements, the results have been pretty disappointing. This is the only one so far that I would even consider letting anyone see.

Looks pretty good, Arlen. This looks like about 1/15-1/8, panned rapidly? Though I like it, I think as you get experienced, you can try for slightly slower down/up, pan-movement. That would have shortened your flower lines, and I think would be slightly more pleasing. Easier said than done, I know! You want to get that composition in the final image, and not just the right blur. Less cropping, no matter which kind of photography is always desirable.

Are you using an Olympus? And is there any noticeable lag when you press the shutter?

You brought back something pretty darned interesting, that's what. I like it.

Concerning the image that I posted, yes it was shot with an Oly E-M1 and Oly 40-150mm f/2.8 lens at 85 mm (170 mm equivalent). The E-M1 has very little shutter lag, less than most DSLRs, including my Canon 5D. The shutter speed for this shot was 1/4 sec. I think you are right about the panning speed. I find it very tricky to get the right speed and direction, and to press the shutter at just the right time. It seems that you have to start panning before you press the shutter, and to continue panning after it closes, to avoid some artifacts. Getting all this down correctly within a fraction of a second will definitely take some practice. How long have you been using this technique?

About 5 or more years. I was kind of reluctant to waste too much time on it until I started seeing some good results. Then it took me a while longer to realize that I could get a higher percentage of successful images with practice. You seem to have hit the nail on the head as far as basic technique is concerned. One more tip. You can use your tripod as brace for more controlled and shorter blur streaks. So with camera unmounted, place arms or hands atop tripod head. Then make you motions. If you find it uncomfortable just place something on top of head. The free hand technique, as you describe it is good for that clean linear look and this is what most people strive for. Take note that results of panning up vs down may look similar but they are not. If you include trunks of trees for example, you will readily see the differences. One drags part of the top of the image toward the bottom, while the other drags the bottom upwards. Look for ghosting at bottom or top of image and decide if that is what you like.

Yes, two exposures. More than two everything gets murky. Multiple exposures works good when you make micromovements.
