A Zen Moment

First version of this was processed by my "other" workflow which certainly needed improvement. This repost uses my new, and I think improved workflow to present this as a more "artsy" shot.

Maybe....there is a type of softness not found in other types of fog shots that I'm not sure lends itself to B&W conversion as well...but...



As per the color image, the white balance is dead on. The Straights of San Juan de Fuca are quite brilliantly blue but even so, I toned the blue down considerably as it wanted to unfairly compete with what little cyan I had in the sky.

Oh, and you have earned the right to critique my work because I respect your work and your opinions...but if you ever start sounding like "he who shall remain unnamed," I'll drive up north and chase you through the streets with my Mini.

I like both versions and don't see a reason to have to choose. I like the blue and it seems to me that in this composition there really isn't much that would look better warmed. It's full of "cool" elements. Very nice work.

Very well done, although I too prefer the colour.  (from someone who lives about 200 yd from the Juan de Fuca strait, I love the clouds/mist there).

My late brother lived at Friday Harbor. His widow and one daughter still live there. I love it out there and plan to return next summer.

I much prefer the colour version: it seems to have a depth which is lost on conversion. I disagree with Slobodan only with great wariness, but I find the shades of blue very appealing.

The blues are natural and the white balance is spot on. While I like the B&W, on this one I did a small print of both and it was about even Steven on which I preferred. Then I sent it to Bay Photo and had tow larger ones made and there is no contest. Color wins the day, hands down.

Thanks for all the kudos. It was an enjoyable shot to watch develop and get to shoot.

I agree, and hope someone comes up with a way to process out the slight line yellowish haze that has been plaguing West facing NorCal coastal photos lately. I don't know the location of this one and didn't check the date of capture, but I know it's been in all my photos of the SF Bay area lately and I can just barely see something similar starting in this one (probably just because I am sensitive to it right now though). Could be from the forest fires, but maybe not?
