Blue Morph Release

Odd, to live so long and not know that butterflies never get larger than when they emerge from the cocoon. They are as big or small as they'll ever be. Weird, but true. This was a release at the Museum of Natural History's Butterfly Pavillion, Gainesville, Fl

Many species of adult butterflies (there are exceptions) live less than two weeks, so there isn't a lot of growth time in there!

Does this mean that Monarchs take two weeks or less for their great migration?

According to the butterfly guy at the pavillion, they never get bigger or smaller than they are when they emerge from their pupa. Some, like the Monarch do live longer as do many moths. Te average life span is in the 20 to 30 day range. This does include early Monarchs though their later in the season brothers who make the long migration live up to eight months. There are many speicies that live no more than 2-3 days. that's about all I know about the fun little guys who are an absolute biotch to capture in flight.

"Hen" looks like a wild turkey to me.

This kayaker was close enough to the manatee to be in the "harrassment" range and was fortunate not to be seen by a park ranger. Having lost so many this year to a stange and yet undetermined malady, their safety and well being is right at the top of every wildlife officer's list.

But, it makes for a great shot and am happy for her silliness. Note the dog in the life vest in the kayak. Personally, knowing the size of the gators in that area, I'm not so sure I'd be in a kayak that small.
