Raw Conversion:: Image Sharpness
« on: November 25, 2012, 09:16:57 am »

Hello:

Apologies in advance if this has been covered before.

Is it me or it is  generally known that Apple Aperture does not render (or convert) the raw files with the same clarity as say Capture One?  It seems to be that sharpness needs to be boosted.  It appears that Capture One is the best in that respect, unfortunately it cannot work with my ancient Canon 5D anymore.

Thanks

Capture One supports the 5D for RAW processing.

Every raw converter will produce a differing appearance of sharpness (among other things) at default settings and it's not even easy to set two or more to produce a base line similar result. IOW, your mileage may vary depending on the converter because raw is raw and each has to apply lots of user supplied rendering settings. Bottom line is, by moving a few sliders, it's possible one could now look sharper than the other.

Jeremy:  my bad, I meant to say it does not support tethering with my 5D under OS 10.8.2.  I have tried it.
Thank you for your response and link.

Every raw processor uses:
- different underlying math (debayering)
- different default settings
- different scales/reference points for their sliders
- different math for what the sliders are doing

Consequently every raw processor will look different to start with and continue to be different no matter what you do with the sliders. You can certainly, through education and trial-and-error, learn to make each processor produce the best result (subjectively measured based on what you like/want/need) but you can never make one look identical to another.

If you like C1 you could use an older version of EOS utility to tether the Canon 5D and use Capture One's "Hot folder" capability to track the images as you shoot. It adds a 1-2 second delay, but often with that delay C1 will still be faster than alternatives. We cover hot folder tethering in our Capture One Masters Program.
